Head-To-Head Testing Criteria

Our team meticulously evaluated these cordless SDS-Plus rotary hammers, across five categories and ranked them.

  1. Performance Test – Speed at drilling various size holes in concrete.
  2. Efficiency Test – Run-time test of recommended battery normalized for Watt-Hour capacity.
  3. Size and Weight – Size matters and weight can get cumbersome. We measured the dimensions and weight of each concrete drill as tested with batteries. [not factored in overall ranking]
  4. On-Board Dust Collection – we tested and ranked features.
  5. User Experience- Combination of features, ergonomics and subjective user evaluations.
Additionally we included price, and best value charts for your consideration.

Silica Dust

The Tool Box Buzz Team recognizes the significant dangers that exposure to silica dust can pose to workers. While we always strive to use any and all personal protective equipment, there are times when we may omit certain PPE during testing. We want to remind anyone that uses concrete cutting and drilling tools to use proper protective equipment to prevent silica dust exposure.

Performance Evaluation | Drilling Test

This test evaluated the speed in which the tools could drill 3-inch deep holes into concrete with 4 different bit sizes. The drilling substrate used was 3,500 psi concrete blocks, 12” x 24” x 4.5″ deep. These concrete blocks had cured for 6-months.

Performance Test Procedure

Drill Sizes Evaluated: ¼”, ⅜”, ½”, and 1″ SDS-Plus rotary drill bits.

  1. Five holes drilled to a depth of 3” using a depth rod and blue tape for accuracy.
  2. Each hole was timed, and an average recorded.
  3. All drills equipped with new Milwaukee SDS-Plus rotary drill bits.
  4. Operators instructed to maintain consistent pressure and let the drill do the work.
  5. Dust extractors were not utilized.
  6. Technique emphasized to ensure fair comparison.

Performance Test Winner – Milwaukee

Milwaukee dominated three out of the four speed tests, earning an impressive overall score of 5. DEWALT’S 60V FlexVolt secured second place with an overall score of 15, excelling particularly with the 1-inch bit test. Hilti and Ridgid claimed third place with an overall score of 18. Metabo followed with a score of 21. The Metabo was not a remarkable tool, but was a consistent “power-house performer.”

Note on DEWALT FlexVolt 60V Rotary Hammer

The DEWALT Flexvolt was an extremely powerful and heavy tool allowing it to shine in the 1-inch drill bit test and subsequent chipping evaluation.

Efficiency Evaluation | Normalized Run-time

Although run-time becomes less critical with sufficient battery capacity, we acknowledge it’s importance in specific scenarios such as with commercial users, installing numerous drop anchors in a day. With so many tools, battery voltages and sizes, we normalized run-time and investigated the efficiency of the tools energy available. Obviously some battery packs contain much more potential energy so it’s important to try and compare them based on the “size of the fuel tank”.

Efficiency Testing Procedure

  1. Vacuums removed for this test.
  2. All tools equipped with fresh batteries.
  3. 1/2″ Milwaukee drill bits drilled to 3″ depth.
  4. Operators instructed to maintain consistent pressure and let the drill do the work.
  5. The total number of drilled holes were counted and scored.

Holes Drilled Per Watt-Hour – Winner Makita 18V

The Makita 18V drill claimed the top spot, surprising us all with it’s performance. This drill managed to complete 66.5 holes with a single 4 Ah battery with a 0.92 holes drilled per watt-hour.

Interestingly, the Makita 36-volt model, despite having twice the available watt-hours, only completed 82 holes, representing just a 23% increase in hole count which equated to only drilling 0.57 holes per watt-hour. This unique comparison between the two Makita drills highlights a design prioritization of efficiency vs power.

The Metabo 18 volt came in second place with 0.85 holes per watt-hour. Third place went to the DEWALT 20 volt with 0.82 holes per watt-hour.

Size and Weight – Not Used In Final Rankings

In the realm of SDS-Plus rotary hammers, size matters to some users. We measured the dimensions and weight of each drill, as tested (with Batteries / handle), and ranked them accordingly.

We felt the two most important factors for these drills were the weight and head length. Having a lightweight tool coupled with a compact size can be an important factor for some users. While we didn’t include this ranking in the final scoring we did account for the size and weight in our user experience rankings below. It’s interesting to see that most of the smaller / lighter tools didn’t perform as well as the heavier tools in the speed testing. Likely this is due to the size of the gear boxes, motors and housings.

In this category, the Kobalt drill boasted the shortest and lightest stature among all drills tested, clinching the top spot. Following closely in second place was the DEWALT 20V, which also showcased a compact form factor and lightweight design. The Ryobi drill secured third place in this ranking.

On-Board Dust Extractor Evaluation

On-board dust extractors are designed to be used as a system. Eight of these tools were sent with compatible on-board dust extractors to evaluate.

Dust Extractor Procedure

We tested the on-board dust extractors, ranking eight criteria:

  1. Capacity – We drilled ½” x 3” holes until we saw dust “ant-hills” form around the hole. At that point we consider the capacity of the dust extractor full.
  2. Visual inspection of capacity.
  3. Filter cleaning – Self cleaning or manual function
  4. Filter replacement – ease of removal.
  5. Depth of hole with attachment.
  6. Depth guide – ease of adjustment.
  7. Replaceable head.
  8. Weight.

On-Board Dust Extractor – Winner Hilti

The Hilti came in first place in the on-board dust extractor category. It was feature rich with its replaceable head, depth guide, and filter cleaning options. Despite clinching the top position, the team collectively noted that the dust canister could be improved by being translucent for better visibility, and the filter could be easier to detach from the canister.

In terms of “capacity” performance, the Hilti canister maintained dust extraction efficiency for 14 holes. Milwaukee drilled 10.5 holes, and Makita 40V managed 15 holes.  Surprisingly, the Metabo HPT drilled 21.5 holes, and the DEWALT 20V drilled 22 holes, but didn’t excel  in other feature comparisons.

User Experience – [Tie] Winner Hilti and Makita 40V

User experience (UX) encompasses the overall satisfaction and ease of use that a tool provides to its users. In this category, our team of Pro users provided subjective rankings for the user experience while handling these rotary hammers. This ranking was based on various factors experienced, including grip, balance, vibration, line of sight, ease of use, fatigue factor, and overall comfort.

The team identified four drills as top performers during testing. The Hilti and Makita were tied for first place, closely followed by a tie between the DEWALT 20V and Milwaukee 18V. All four of these tools exhibited commendable performance in our testing and were noted for their user experience.

Rotational Force | Bind Test – Not Ranked

When a drill binds, it has the potential to violently spin the tool around potentially injuring the user.
To assess the performance in binding situations, we conducted a subjective test by drilling a 1-inch diameter, 8-inch, deep hole in concrete and side load force.

3 Types of Safety Shut-Offs in Rotary Hammers

  1. Accelerometer – An electronic component integrated into the tool that detects sudden rotation and initiates an automatic shutdown.
  2. Mechanical – Utilizes a straightforward mechanical clutch mechanism whereby the tool continues to run, but the bit stops spinning when the clutch is engaged.
  3. Electronic Overload – An electronic overload function is activated either before the mechanical clutch or during specific binding scenarios. This electronic overload serves to safeguard the electronics, motor, and battery, while also acting as a safety feature in certain situations.

Rotational Force Findings

During our testing, all of these tools effectively shut off when the tool was bound up and the user had a firm grip on both the tool and the auxiliary handle.

Standout tools featured all three safety mechanisms, predominantly found in higher-end models such as those from Bosch, Hilti, Makita (40-volt) and Milwaukee. These tools successfully incorporated all three mechanisms that we were able to activate during field testing.

Chipping Test – Winner DEWALT 60V

Our chipping testing methodology was primarily subjective in nature. We employed our drill testing blocks to conduct the chipping tests.

TBB Crew users utilized the rotary hammers to break up the test blocks, after which they provided feedback via a form detailing their chipping experience.

The consensus from our testing suggests that there’s a “secret sauce” combination of impact energy and beats per minute (BPM) that yields optimal chipping power. This mix of factors seems to be instrumental in achieving productive chipping results.

The DEWALT 60V was the largest and heaviest tool in the group and with 4.5 FT-LBS of energy, it’s no surprise that it excelled at chipping, taking first place

The DEWALT Flexvolt was a “jack hammer disguised as a drill  ~ TBB Crew Wes Bartosik

The Makita 40V came in second. It has tons of power and minimal vibrations felt, due to its well throughout decoupling. The Milwaukee 18V came in third place. It delivers an incredible amount of energy on impact and was very controllable while cutting scribe lines.

SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer | Price – Not Included In Final Scoring

Most manufacturers offer these rotary hammers in kit form, bundling the tool with a battery optimized for performance while maintaining a manageable weight. Achieving the best user experience hinges on finding the right balance between weight, balance, and power to accomplish tasks efficiently.

For your reference, we have listed bare tool pricing below, although this wasn’t factored into our final scoring. As an illustration of the cost range, the Kobalt is available as a bare tool for $99.00, while the Makita 40-volt model is priced at $589.00. Please refer to the attached chart for further details.

Best Cordless 1-Inch SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer – Winner Milwaukee 18V

While impact energy undoubtedly influences a tool’s performance, it’s crucial to recognize that it’s not the sole determinant of effectiveness. Other factors, such as RPM and BPM, also play significant roles in achieving the desired outcome for the user. Harmonizing impact energy, RPM, and BPM is essential to optimize the tool’s overall efficiency and effectiveness.

Decisions should be based on considerations related to ergonomics, safety, and mechanical performance. Balancing these aspects ensures that the tool not only performs well but also prioritizes the safety and user experience of the user.

It’s noteworthy that when ranking our categories, we assigned double weight to performance scores, considering it the most valuable category.

Milwaukee claimed the top spot in performance, secured second place in dust extraction, and ranked third in both user experience (UX) and chipping. Its overall performance stood out as the clear winner.

Second Place honors go to the Makita 40V.  This Makita excelled in UX, chipping and dust extraction. The Makita 40V was a favorite among the crew, tying with Hilti for the top spot in UX.

Hilti rounded out the podium in 3rd place.  The Hili was also heavily sought after by the crew and ranking first in the UX category, boasting the best dust extraction, and coming in eighth in performance testing and fourth in chipping.

Tied for fourth place was Metabo and DEWALT 60V. Metabo stood out with it’s second place in efficiency and scored well in both user experience and chipping. The DEWALT 60V was impressive in the chipping tests and performance.

Best Value 1″  SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer – Winner Ridgid

This category winner often strikes a chord with users as it showcases an SDS-Plus drill that performs admirably while being more budget-friendly. In many respects, it’s a category of significant importance, sometimes overshadowing the top-ranked contender, crowned king of our 1″ SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer Head-to-Head Test.

The DEWALT 20V MAX* XR® Brushless 1-1/8 in. SDS Plus D-Handle Rotary Hammer Kit – Model DCH263R2DH was recently supplied to us for review. Let’s take a closer look at this DEWALT DCH263R2DH Rotary Hammer!

DEWALT’s Rotary Hammers coupled with their dust extractions are some of the best in the industry. In our 2014 Best SDS Corded Rotary Hammer Head to Head DEWALT took first place in Dust Control and Vacuum Integration.  DEWALT continues to improve its OSHA Compliance for Silica extraction which we will touch on in the next section of this review.

OSHA Table 1 Compliant

Crystalline silica particles can be found in the dust produced by cutting, grinding, drilling, or otherwise disrupting these materials. These dust particles are extremely minute. You are unable to see them. Lung illness and lung cancer are caused by inhalable silica dust. A small amount of airborne silica dust can cause serious health problems.

Silica dust particles become lodged in lung tissue, producing inflammation and scarring, as well as a reduction in the lungs’ ability to absorb oxygen. Silicosis is the medical term for this illness. Silicosis is a gradual, debilitating, and occasionally fatal condition that causes lifelong lung damage. For more information on Table 1 Compliance, check out the link to OSHA Table 1

The DEWALT DCH263R2DH features the OSHA Table 1 Compliant DWH205DH; This dust extraction system features a powerful built-in motor for increased suction and high-performance drilling. The two-second power-off delay ensures that dust extraction continues after the drill is switched off. The DWH205DH features three nozzle heads for maximum dust collection during the application. This unit includes an OSHA 1926.1153-compliant Dust Box Assembly. Equipped with a filter cleaning mechanism and a HEPA filter, it removes 99.97% of airborne particles 0.3 microns or greater.

On the Job

This DEWALT 20V MAX* XR® Brushless 1-1/8 in. SDS Plus D-Handle Rotary Hammer with onboard dust extractor is lightweight, vibration reduction, is built to meet the needs of today’s contractors. The DCH263R2 Hammer is fast in chipping applications and has an optimal drilling range of 1/4 in. to 3/4 in.

A couple of our recent projects have made use of the DEWALT DCH263R2DH Kit.  The SDS drill was used to secure 3/8″x4″ Hex Washer Head Tapcons into the cement pad during a deck makeover. DEWALT DCH263R2DH Rotary Hammer easily cut into the cement. When the trigger is pressed, the dust extractor automatically starts and removes all of the silica dust.

Our second job was a basement remodel where we were framing new walls. The same concept as the deck stair securing, drilling into the wood, and tapconing into the cement with 1/4″ taps throughout the basement. We drilled over a hundred holes into concrete with no issues.

Dust Extracting

The brushed dust nozzle head, which glides back and forth, is where particles first begin to be drawn in. It maximizes dust collection and maintains contact with the drilling surface. The dust is sucked up through the sliding bar, where it enters the dust bin after passing through the filter.

SHOCKS-Active Vibration Control

Compared to hammers without this function, the SHOCKS-Active Vibration Control system lessens vibration felt at the handles. The transfer of energy to your wrist and forearm is greatly reduced. This SDS provides a full day’s work, even when drilling large diameter holes in the hardest / toughest concrete. Combining characteristics like its hard-hitting mechanism, quick drilling speed, long run time, and balanced design make it optimal for all-day use.

Cleaning the Dust Extractor Filter

To clean the dust bin, all you have to do is remove it from the tool, unlock it and remove the bin from the extractor. There is a “knock” feature on the extractor that will knock the dust off the filter and allow you to maintain continue drilling until the extractor bin is full. Pushing the lever up allows a burst of air to come in and it knocks the particles off the filter and into the bin. Similar to what you would see on a dust extractor vacuum.

3 Nozzles Options

For optimal dust collection during the drilling applications, the DWH205DH has three nozzle heads. The accompanying nozzles are tuned for small diameter bits up to 1/2″ to 1″ in diameter. For drilling applications, this dust extractor allows bit lengths up to 10 in. overall.

Overall Impression

For me, an SDS drill is not my most popular tool. It is one that when you need it, you need it, and there isn’t an alternative or substitute. The DEWALT DCH263R2DH Rotary Hammer with its built-in dust extraction is simply a beast. It’s a workhorse with all the bells and whistles while maintaining its lightweight and great ergonomics. Using this hammer for a good part of the work day and did not notice any additional fatigue. Definitely TBB Recommended!!

Metabo 18V SDS-PLUS 1” Rotary Hammer Drill

4.5/5
Manufacturer: Metabo
Model number: 600211900-K4
Power source: 18 Volt
Motor size: Brushless -0-1200 RPM, 4,500 BPM and 2.2 Joules
Weight: 9.9 lbs
I recently reviewed the Metabo 18V SDS-PLUS 1” Rotary Hammer Drill w/HEPA Vac attachment

SDS Rotary Hammer Drills are no small investment. Whether this tool is your workhorse in a commercial setting or your life-saver in the residential setting a 1″ SDS- plus is always a “nice-to-have” for professional remodelers whether for demolition, framing applications, or basement renovations.

Metabo 18V SDS-PLUS 1” Rotary Hammer Drill

SDS stands for Special Direct System and these heavy-duty tools can make quick work of concrete demolition, speed up your foundation work, and be a lifesaver when working in a basement and need to effectively bolt to or chip concrete.

At ToolBoxBuzz were avid believers in the right tool for the right job. We recently took a look at the Metabo KHA Cordless Hammer Drill and applied it to our residential and light commercial job sites.

Metabo 18V SDS-PLUS 1” Rotary Hammer Drill

Metabo SDS-PLUS Rotary Hammer Features

The Metabo KHA Cordless Hammer Drill is extremely lightweight and easy to handle SDS-plus cordless hammer with the integrated suction interface. This interface [ISA 18 LTX 24] works off the tool’s battery and provides dust-free drilling.

The Metabo KHA Cordless Hammer Drill has 3 functions:

  1. Hammer drilling
  2. Drilling
  3. Chiseling

The Metabo KHA Cordless Hammer Drill is powered by an efficient Brushless Motor with variable speed that delivers.

Metabo 18V SDS-PLUS 1” Rotary Hammer Drill

Metabo’s 2nd generation brushless motor is completely sealed to prevent abrasive material from getting into the motor and damaging the rare earth magnets. Originally developed for grinders in metal cutting environments this motor housing has been carried over and used to protect masonry tool motors as well.

The separate vacuum motor also increases suction efficiency without sacrificing the performance of the rotary hammer.

The Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA) has determined safe noise levels and has made recommendations that specific ear protection devices be worn within sound levels of 85dB. This tool emits 91 dB(A) so hearing protection is recommended.

The Metabo weighs 9.9 lbs. including the battery pack.  This puts this tool in a sweet-spot for above shoulder and overhead drilling.

Metabo 18V SDS-PLUS 1” Rotary Hammer Drill

Metabo Anti-Vibration Technology

Metabo uses what they call Metabo VibraTech (MVT) which reduces vibration in the tool resulting in less fatigue to the user. The side handle has vibration dampening properties and the rear handle has an internal pivot and spring. If you keep the tool from bottoming out, the spring will assist in absorbing vibrations created by the tool.  The thing to remember here is “let the tool do the job.”

Metabo 18V SDS-PLUS 1” Rotary Hammer Drill

Metabo Quick Change Chuck

One feature that we really like is the Metabo Quick fast drill chuck which allows you to exchange chucks on this tool from the SDS-plus to straight shank drill chuck for drilling wood or metal. This feature allows you to use the rotational only mode effectively giving you two tools in one.

The Metabo drill is listed as a 1-inch SDS-plus hammer but its optimal range for drilling is 3/16 to 5/8 SDS-pls bits.  When the vacuum unit is attached [diam port on vac] limits to 5/8 diameter bits. Larger bits will require a wall suction-mounted dust attachment.

Metabo 18V SDS-PLUS 1” Rotary Hammer Drill

Metabo Vario Tacho Constamatic (VTC)

The VTC mode drives additional voltage to the motor as drilling or chipping load is added to the motor this keeps the number of blows constant throughout tools application.

Metabo SDS-PLUS Rotary Hammer Bit Capacity

  • capacity in concrete with hammer drills 1 “
  • capacity in masonry with core bits 2 5/8 “
  • capacity in steel 1/2 “
  • capacity in softwood 1 “

Metabo 18V SDS-PLUS 1” Rotary Hammer Drill

Metabo Ultra-M Charging Technology

The Metabo charger is air-cooled. A fan system draws cooling air through the hot [recently used] battery. The lithium-Ion battery will not accept a charge when hot. The battery charger cools the battery cells down so it can start the charging process 30% quicker. The charger fan also blows over the internal charger electronics keeping them cooler as well.

Metabo 18V SDS-PLUS 1” Rotary Hammer Drill

It’s because of this charging system that Metabo is confident to offer a 3-year unconditional warranty on the battery pack and chargers.

Metabo 18V SDS-PLUS 1” Rotary Hammer Drill

Metabo SDS-PLUS Rotary Hammer Dust Collection

The separate vacuum motor attachment works great. It quickly and easily attaches to the tool. It increases suction efficiency without sacrificing the performance of the rotary hammer. The HEPA Dust Extraction Vacuum Attachment is trigger-activated and dust is channeled into the clear dust container with HEPA filter, which captures 99.98% of dust particles (size 0.3 microns).

After the trigger is released, the 3-second extended suction collects remnant dust and particles as the bit is being pulled out of the work surface, making this ideal for overhead drilling.

The dust attachment does not have a filter cleaning feature so it technically does not meet OSHA Table 1 requirements. It does have objective data available.  Metabo tells us they are working on a manual cranking system to be able to clean the filters.

The dust attachment arm only works with 6-inch long drill bits and allows you to drill approximately a 4-inch depth. Lots of people point out that they often want to use a longer bit but the dust attachment doesn’t work. The solution here is to use the shorted 6-inch bit first, to drill a 4-inch deep hole. Then attach a longer 8 to10-inch drill bit to drill deeper holes with the dust attachment attached.

Metabo 18V SDS-PLUS 1” Rotary Hammer Drill

Using the Metabo 18V SDS-PLUS 1” Rotary Hammer Drill

What I liked about the tool the most is its power, versatility, and balance. It’s a small enough tool to fit into tight spots and it packs a punch.

When the vacuum is attached it balances the tool out perfectly.

This is a tool that is perfectly designed for contractors working overhead installing things like 3/8” or ½” drop-in anchors, electronic channels fire suppression systems or Unistrut channel.

Metabo 18V SDS-PLUS 1” Rotary Hammer Drill

Metabo SDS-PLUS Rotary Hammer Cost

I’m NOT sure you’ll find a better deal than this!  Ohio Power tools have a pretty aggressive sale going on now – check out the purchase link below. This price should be good for at least a week or two so be sure to jump on this while supplies last.

The Metabo SDS-plus hammer sells for $169 bare tool (originally $399) and $269 with 1x 4.0Ah Kit (originally $499).

When you stop to look around…. Nobody else has a chuck system like this,  I think so few people really know Metabo for cordless.

Sure they make great grinders and metalworking tools BUT they’re really big in concrete work.

Final Thoughts On The Metabo SDS-PLUS Rotary Hammer

The Metabo hammer is sized-right for remodeling and general construction. It handles 80-90% of what we do with hammer drills. Its lightweight, powerful and built-in vacuum contains the silica dust.

Dewalt FlexVolt 1-7/8” SDS Max Rotary Hammer looks just like its older corded brother, it even has the same internal mechanism, but it’s NOT corded.

Dewalt FlexVolt 1-7/8” SDS Max Hammer Drill Features

This cordless hammer can operates in 2 modes hammer / rotary drilling  and hammer only [chipping]. It has two safety features that I know I will greatly appreciate, they are:

  1. E-Clutch System
  2. SHOCKS Active Vibration Control

E-Clutch System [Overload clutch]

The E-Clutch system senses the motion of the tool and shuts it down if necessary. Its  anti-rotational technology protects the user in bind-up / stall situations. When the tool sense a stall or bind situation, it adjusts torque accordingly.  A red LED indicator illuminates when the E-clutch system is engaged.

SHOCKS Active Vibration Control

The SHOCKS technology is basically Active Vibration Control which reduces vibration felt by the user at the handles. The handle is decoupled from the tool which ends up in reduced vibration felt by the user. This floating rear anti-vibration handle does a nice job at reducing vibration.

We used the DCH733 to install a car jack in a client’s garage. We found it to be a fast drilling, low vibration tool in older, hard concrete.

The tool achieves 13.3 Joules [According to EPTA-Procedure 05/2009]and 350 RPM.

Electronic Speed and Impact Control

TheDewalt FlexVolt 1-7/8” SDS Max Rotary Hammer has constant speed electronics allowing the tool to maintain speed under load.

The electronic speed and impact control allow the use of smaller bits without the risk of breakage. It allows hammer drilling into light and brittle materials without shattering giving the user more precise control through a speed dial.

E-Clutch and Service Indicator LED Light

This rotary hammer has two LEDs that indicate the E-Clutch function and a service indicator. The light functions are:

  • RED – E-Clutch is engaged
  • Yellow [Flashing] The tool runs for 150 hrs then service light comes on indicating that the mechanism needs a service to be performed in the next 10 hrs. of operation/trigger time.
  • Yellow [Solid] After that 10hrs the light goes solid and indicates that you have exceeded the service interval and may damage the tool.

Chisel Index Position

The chisel can be indexed and locked into 24 different positions.  This feature, while not a new one, certainly that makes the tool ergonomically friendlier to use.

Using the Dewalt FlexVolt 1-7/8” SDS Max Hammer Drill

We used the Flexvolt rotary hammer both in the horizontal and vertical drilling positions. At 20-pounds, it’s a manageable tool to do both, and certainly powerful enough.

It drilled effortlessly into a poured concrete wall to install gym equipment and later we used it to install and bolt down a vehicle jack system on a concrete floor.

The drill was easy to set up and use, and intuitive. It’s perfect for use in concrete demo,  drilling, chipping, breaching cinderblock, rebar doweling, and trenching.

Though this new DEWALT tool is bigger and heavier than my 1-3/4” DEWALT rotary hammer, DEWALT has been able to keep the weight down of the tool and increase the impact energy 20% to 13.3J’s.

With increases in power comes weight!

Milwaukee® Announces Its Fastest Drilling, Hardest Hitting SDS Max Rotary Hammer

MILWAUKEE, WI- Unwavering in their dedication to delivering productivity-enhancing solutions that provide the right blend of power, run-time, and performance, Milwaukee Tool is proud to announce its fastest drilling and hardest hitting SDS Max rotary hammer yet. The M18 FUEL™ 1-3/4” Rotary Hammer w/ ONE-KEY™ generates the power of a 15amp corded hammer of the same size, features an electromagnetic clutch for maximum control and safety during use, and is capable of chipping a 1/2 ton of material per charge. Equipped with ONE-KEY™, users can also easily track, manage, and secure the rotary hammer through the ONE-KEY™ app on their mobile device.

“Despite the growth of cordless rotary hammer solutions on the jobsite, there remain a wide array of larger capacity tasks that require the use of 1-3/4” rotary hammers. Unfortunately, because the larger cordless solutions available lack the capacity and speed needed for these applications, users continue to turn to their corded units,” said Kevin Gee, Senior Product Manager for Milwaukee Tool. “Due to the vast advantages of M18 FUEL™* cordless technology, we’re able to change all of that with the best performing rotary hammer in our company’s history, which not only boasts the benefits of no cords or generators but also drills faster than corded.”

When equipped with Milwaukee’s new M18™ REDLITHIUM™ HIGH OUTPUT™ HD12.0 Battery, the rotary hammer can chip up to a ½ ton of material per charge, eliminating the hassle of cords while exceeding the performance of corded. The new HIGH OUTPUT™ HD12.0 Battery provides 50% more power, runs 50% cooler, and delivers 33% more run-time than the M18™ REDLITHIUM™ HD9.0 Battery.

The new tool is also engineered with a proprietary AUTOSTOP™ electromagnetic clutch for the safest drilling and demolition experience. This clutch kicks in during lock up to prevent over rotation, minimizing potential rotation to only 45 degrees versus the typical 360 degrees of rotation users often experience with other hammers in this class.

Through ONE-KEY™** users can track, manage, and secure the rotary hammer. The ONE-KEY™ Integrated Tool Tracking functionality allows users to identify where and when their rotary hammer was last seen on the jobsite. Records and locations will update when any device with the ONE-KEY™ app comes within 100ft of the hammer, allowing the user to quickly pinpoint missing tools. Integrated Tool Security provides an extra layer of protection to prevent theft and tampering. With Simplified Tool and Equipment Management, users also have a central place to take inventory of their rotary hammer and all other tools and equipment and keep detailed records of all inventory to easily build a budget and manage spend.

With the launch of this new hammer, Milwaukee® continues to be the only power tool manufacturer to provide a full line of rotary hammer solutions all on one battery platform. The new M18 FUEL™ 1-3/4” SDS Max Rotary Hammer is part of the M18™ System, now offering more than 175 power tool products for unrivaled productivity.

* M18 FUEL™ is engineered for the most demanding tradesmen in the world. Delivering unrivaled performance, all M18 FUEL™ products feature three Milwaukee®-exclusive innovations—The POWERSTATE™ Brushless Motor, REDLITHIUM™ Battery Pack and REDLINK PLUS™ Intelligence Hardware and Software—that deliver unmatched power, run-time and durability on the jobsite. Simply put, M18 FUEL™ tools are the most powerful 18V cordless tools in their class.

**ONE-KEY™ is the first digital platform for tools and equipment. By integrating industry-leading tool electronics with a custom-built cloud-based program, ONE-KEY™ provides a new level of control and access to information that revolutionizes the way work gets done. The ability to customize, track, and manage through ONE-KEY™ fundamentally changes the way users interact with their tools.

The Bosch GBH18V-26 18V EC Brushless 1 In. SDS-plus Bulldog Rotary Hammer allows you to cut the cord for small masonry holes, like drop in anchors and wedge anchors.

The best part of this hammer drill is its compact size. It measures 3″ wide  by 13.7″ long, weighs  7.7lbs, and delivers 1.9 Ft.-Lbs. of impact energy, that is an outstanding impact-to-weight ratio in anyone’s book.

This integrated acceleration sensor automatically shuts the tool down when a potentially dangerous rotational torque reaction occurs preventing the tool from rotating out of control and causing injury.

Performance

The Bosch GBH18V-26 also has such advanced features as Electronic Precision Control, [EPC] which limits max startup power to up to 70 percent, offering a slower ramp-up.

Whether your drilling or chiseling, this slow ramp-up gives you reduced max performance for more accurate bit starting and better control of the tool.  The EPC selector switch is located in the handle area of the tool.

The tools has a variable speed trigger and an electric brake works well and immediately stops the chuck quickly. We found it easy to operate and maneuver.

Mode Selector Dial

The Bosch GBH18V-26 has a mode selector dial allows the tool to be set for various applications. The mode options are:

  1. Drilling Only
  2. Drilling / Hammering

  4. Hammering Only

Ergonomics

The Bosch GBH18V-26 has Vibration Control, in the hammer mechanism and grip area, making the tool easier to handle for longer periods of time.  An ergonomic L-shaped design allows for comfortable horizontal drilling applications.

Motor Electronics and Battery Protection

Motor electronics protect this tool with a sensor that manages temperature     to avoid overheating. Electronic Cell Protection keeps the battery from overloading and overheating which equates to more runtime for the tool. These technologies transfer operational data between the tool and battery to control energy flow and avoid potential tool damage.

These electronic protections protect your tool, [your investment], from you pushing the tool to hard!

The batteries include Bosch’s CoolPack technology, which is a heat conductive housing that keep batteries cooler for superior run time and 2X life.

Cost

The Bosch GBH18V-26 comes as a bare tool and costs $350.00 and $519 as a kit. Overall we were impressed with this little Bulldog. Its size to power ratio is super impressive.

Lithium-ion, advanced electronics and brushless motors have changed the rules of cordless tool.  Today’s 18volt cordless tools simply crush their earlier compares from years past in both power and runtime. The Bosch 1 Inch SDS-plus Bulldog Rotary Hammer is no exception.

Bosch 1 Inch SDS-plus Bulldog Rotary Hammer

Bosch is one company that is regarded in concrete drilling. Its SDS or “Special Direct System” drills are often the preferred tool for contractors drilling in concrete. These SDS tools are usually corded, heavy and powerful, the Bulldog is only one of those things, it’s powerful!

Brushless Motor

Bosch is working hard to “cut the cord,” on their high demand tools like SDS hammer drills. The Bosch 1 Inch SDS-plus Bulldog Rotary Hammer was designed with a brushless drop motor, that surpasses earlier generation cordless tools by 50-percent in impact energy and run-time.

The brushless motor has advanced features such as an Electronic Precision Control, for smoother bit startups, allowing for a slower ramp-up for accurate bit starts. It delivers 1.9 Ft.-Lbs. of impact energy.

Bosch has hit a home-run here, and this cordless drill is the closest thing to a corded tool, I’ve seen them do. Truly impressive.
Bosch 1 Inch SDS-plus Bulldog Rotary Hammer

The tool has an L-shaped design which helps facilitate horizontal, shoulder height drilling, and the spring built into the handle, is an obvious part of their vibration controls, designed to reduce user fatigue.

The tool, like many of the higher end cordless tools these days, has built in electronics that monitor the motor and battery, protecting both from overheating and overload.

It produces 0-4,350 no-load BPM and 0-890 no-load RPM.

Kickback Control

The Bosch 1 Inch SDS-plus Bulldog Rotary Hammer has a Kickback Control, that uses a sensor to stop the tool from rotating when bind up situations are encountered. If you’ve ever been the recipient of a drill kicking back, you will appreciate this feature!

Lightweight and Powerful

The Bosch 1 Inch SDS-plus Bulldog Rotary Hammer measures 13.7-inches long, and weighs 7.7 Lbs., but don’t let its small size fool you. It delivers 1.9 Ft.-Lbs. of impact energy, for an outstanding impact-to-weight ratio. How’s for a strength to size ratio? That’s the equivalent of 10 pounds of muscle in a 5 pound bag!!

Overall Thoughts

The Bosch 1 Inch SDS-plus Bulldog Rotary Hammer is a perfect tool for those everyday mid-sized drilling applications. While it will not take the place of my larger SDS drill, it sure does handle most of the mid-level tasks I do, and does it in a lighter package.

For me the biggest takeaway is that I can now use a cordless tool, that is lightweight and powerful to get 80-90% of what I do accomplished.

We were super impressed with its weight to power ratio. Again, don’t let this small drill fool you, it’ll get the job done and you may even enjoy yourself in the process!

Milwaukee M18 FUEL 1″ SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer Review 2712-22

The folks at Milwaukee view themselves as a “solution provider.”   They try to focus on developing tools that save time, are more productive and ultimately help you do your job batter than was done in the past.   That brings us to their recently released Milwaukee M18 Cordless SDS Rotary Hammer 2712-22.

The interesting part of this release is that the 2712-22 is the first and only full SDS Plus solution powered by one battery system.  To appreciate why this is so cool, you need to understand SDS rotary hammer drill trends.

Rob SDS

Hammer Drill Trends:

The SDS Plus rotary hammer market is divided into three product segments:

  • Compact
  • Medium
  • Large

The SDS Plus rotary hammer market is currently trending away from corded and more towards cordless, as users can now rely on the power, run-time and increased productivity that cordless tools offer.

Up till now, technology did not exist to use a single battery platform that was small enough for use on compact tools but powerful enough for medium and large tools.

We all know that many contractors often choose a tool brand and then purchase tools and build on that battery platform.  SDS drills are no exception and folks DO NOT want to manage multiple battery platforms.

Milwaukee M18 Cordless SDS Rotary Hammer 2712-22

Milwaukee SDS Battery Technology

Milwaukee combined, the POWERSTATE, brushless motor, REDLITHIUM battery pack, and REDLINK PLUS intelligence to fill these three categories with cordless models, all on one battery platform.

These SDS rotary hammers are:

  • M18 Compact               5/8” SDS rotary hammer   2612-22
  • M18 Mid-weight           7/8” SDS rotary hammer   2605-22
  • M18 FUEL Mid-weight 1” SDS+ rotary hammer       2715-22
  • M18 FUEL Larger       1-1/8” SDS+ rotary hammer 2715-22

According to Milwaukee and some testing I did at their recent media event, the new M18 FUEL 1” and 1-1/8” SDS+ Rotary Hammers drill faster than their corded counterparts.   That’s super impressive when you stop and think about it.

Milwaukee further claims that these hammers are designed to deliver a full day of work on one XC4.0 battery charge.

First Impression:

The very first thing I noticed about the  “mid-weight” drop motor design, 2712-22 rotary hammer was how compact and light it was.  It weighs only 8.5 pounds – and is very noticeable.   Using this hammer over-head, one-handed, is a reality with this rotary hammer.

The second thing I noticed was the “rubber bellow” separating the handle from the hammer. This is part of the tools AVS or anti vibration system. It acts as a shock absorber between the tool and the users hand and helps reduce user fatigue.

Milwaukee M18 Cordless SDS Rotary Hammer 2712-22

Using the Milwaukee M18 Cordless SDS Rotary Hammer 2712-22

The 2712-22 is compact and light but powerful. I used it to drill a series of 3/8-inch holes in a 20-year-old, poured concrete foundation without issue. The variable speed trigger was helpful controlling the bit when starting out.

The LED was super convenient for illuminating the joist bay.  It seems like Milwaukee is putting LED lights on all their cordless tools – I like it.

The chiseling mode worked equally as well and I chipped away at concrete as if I were using a corded model. I would be remiss if I did not speak to the mode selector switch. There are four modes on the mode selector switch that allow the user to select from:

  1. Drilling
  2. Rotary hammering
  3. Chiseling
  4. Chisel Lock off mode

Chisel Lock Off Mode

I really liked using the chisel lock off mode. This mode the user to manually rotate the chisel bit to the exact position desired.  Once in position you simply turn the selector mode back to chiseling and your ready to chip mortar.

The beauty to this is safety, comfort and control. Chisel lock off mode allows you to rotate the chisel bit, rather than rotate the tool to an uncomfortable or unsafe position.

I found the side handle and adjustable clamping lever to be quick and easy to operate and adjust. The bit release collar was easy to operate, as was the variable speed trigger.

The trigger appeared small and designed for one-finger. I anticipated having difficulty operating this tool with large bulky gloves, but that wasn’t the case at all.  Wearing large, bulky gloves did not interfere with using the one-finger trigger.

Improvements

Milwaukee provides a sturdy molded plastic case with the 2712-22 but “drops the ball” with in-case bit storage. There is a small compartment for bits but its not nearly enough for a pro assortment of bits.  Everybody knows that we want to store ALL of our bits in the drill box!
