JET 1020 Benchtop Drum Sander

La Vergne, TN – JET® has added a new 1020 benchtop drum sander to its class-leading drum sander family – the JET 1020 BT Drum Sander, which replaces the JET 10-20PLUS Drum Sander.  Although even more compact and lighter weight than its predecessor, the upgraded 1020 BT Drum Sander is loaded with premium features found on larger, high-end JET models, such as an open-ended arm design, pull-through conveyor and patented high-performance dust hood.

The drum sander’s redesigned hood features an integrated channel that directs dust and debris to a 4” diameter dust port on top of its hinged hood. This innovation removes up to 97% of all dust when paired with a JET Cyclone Dust Collector.

“The new JET 1020 BT Drum Sander is a smart choice for many woodworkers who have limited space or need to move the sander around their shop,” said Tobias Bridges, Director of Product Management – Woodworking. “This small but powerful bench top drum sander can precisely, efficiently and continuously sand a wide range of projects, such as furniture stock, inlays, flat trim and resawn boards.”

Weighing 73 lbs., the compact, benchtop sander has a footprint of 27” X 18”. Its heavy-duty, die-cast aluminum and steel construction ensures rigidity and minimal vibration.  The sander’s open-ended design allows sanding of work pieces up to 10” wide in a single pass, and up to 20” wide by making two passes.  The machine sands material from 1/32 to 3” thick.

Parallelism of the drum sander’s precision-flattened, reinforced-steel conveyor bed can be adjusted by unlocking the conveyer and simply turning a dial on the lower-left side of the machine.  The parallelism adjustment dial features a stop to quickly return the conveyor bed to a flat position. An improved conveyor system pulls the work piece through the sander instead of pushing it. This upgrade provides consistently smooth sanding action and minimal belt stress.

The sander is powered by a 1 HP, single-phase, 115V motor, which turns the sanding drum at 1725 RPM.  The conveyor belt is driven separately by a direct-drive, dc motor. This combination provides both consistent sanding power and precise conveyor speed control.

Infinitely variable speed control allows the operator to set the optimal feed rate from 0 to 10 fpm to produce the desired sanding action.  The control console is located up-front for easy operator access and incorporates an integrated circuit breaker to protect the motor from overheating.  There is a large depth scale located on the front of the sander, as well as a reference scale on the top under the hand wheel that adjusts drum height to control the depth of material removal.  This high-visibility scale enables the operator to reset and measure the depth setting of each project.  Each full turn of the crank adjusts the drum height by 1/16” for precise sanding thickness control.

The sanding drum measures 5” in diameter by 10” long and is designed for smooth running and heat dissipation.  The precision-machined and balanced, extruded aluminum drum is self-cooling to prevent heat damage to the work piece or abrasive sleeve.  Tool-less abrasive take-up fasteners make changing abrasive sleeves quick and easy.  This 1020 drum sander comes with an 80 grit sandpaper roll. JET also offers rolls ranging from 36 to 220 grit.

The JET 1020 BT Drum Sander is covered by a three-year warranty, as well as JET’s RED AssuranceTM. The JET Red Assurance service and support program features 750 authorized dealers throughout the U.S. The U.S. based customer service program provides tech support as well as extensive online resources, including access to 40,000 unique in-stock parts. To locate the nearest authorized service center call 1-800-274-6848 or click on the SERVICE CENTER link.

JWDS 16-32 Drum Sander With Stand Review

Jet 16-32 Drum Sander

3.5/5
Manufacturer: Jet
Model number: 16-32
Price: 1099.00
Power source: Electric 115v - 20 Amp
Motor size: 1-1/2 HP, 1 PH, Direct Drive
Weight: 156 lbs
Years ago when I began my woodworking business I found myself where many of us do, making cutting boards like they’re going out of style. They’re fun, simple, and they sell most importantly. Problem is, they’re time consuming for such small items, and they’re difficult to get dead flat especially when they are end grain. So after a few months of debating, and putting my Festool Rotex 150 through a beating, I invested in a JET 16-32 drum sander.

Setting up the Jet Drum Sander

  • Out of the box the tool went together fairly easily. I would recommend two people to getit into place, as it is considerably heavy. It comes with a metal base and adjustable feet which helped to get it level, but ended up being quite flimsy and the bolt adjustments on the feet come loose quite often.
  • The tool comes with some standard grit paper (80,120, 220) which was nice to be able to use right out of the box. Putting the paper onto the drum is a whole other story. The latches inside the drum are very difficult to get to. The tool comes with a special tool to access the hold downs for the paper, but it barely helps. After owning the tool for 3 years, I just jam my finger down and pull the lever to put the paper in. This is probably my biggest issue with the tool. Makes changing paper more time consuming than it needs to be.
  • Adjusting the belt is fairly simple and self explanatory. It has two bolts for tensioning, and fixed wrenches that stay with the bolts on the machine. Because it is open ended, if you want to replace the belt, it’s simply a matter of loosening the tension and sliding on a new one.

Dust Collection

The tool has a 4” dust port located on the top lid of the drum, because of this it does do a pretty good job at collecting at the source. The only issue I have is that overhead ports make it difficult to keep out of the way in a small shop. You have flex hose laying on the machine or somewhere that will eventually get in the way. I mounted a ring over the machine to the ceiling, and hung my hose through that for an easy fix. Running a cheap HF 1.5 HP dust collector had plenty of power for this machine.

General Thoughts on the Jet Drum Sander

The 16-32 Drum Sander is a nice addition to anyone doing small parts and looking for an easy way to sand/flatten smaller parts. It does save a considerable amount of time for products like end grain cutting boards and small batched parts. I would not recommend this tool to replace a planer or be used for strictly flattening.

Depth Adjustment

The drum depth and depth of cut are very inconsistent, and typically only work well in relevance to the piece you’re using. I have also tried to use the tool to flatten table tops in the 28” – 30” range. I personally had a low success rate here due to the fact the machine comes with no additional support for pieces larger than the 16” drum. You can buy out-feed tables and build custom support tables if you have these intentions, but for my workflow it became more of a hassle than a time saver.

Final Thoughts/ Rating

I would recommend this tool to most anyone running a small shop looking for the added bonus of a fast way for flattening small items. I purchased it hoping to be able to use it for both table tops and small items, and was not impressed. That being said, during cutting board season this machine is a workhorse and is worth the investment. It saves time and produces a better product, just don’t assume it’ll be great for every application you can think of. I would rate it a 3.5 out of 5.

JET 16-32 Plus Drum Sander

jet-1632-drum-sanderLa Vergne, TN – For more than 14 years, JET’s 16-32 Plus Drum Sander with Stand has been the brand’s most popular woodworking machine and the industry’s undisputed class leader.  Now, this versatile, accurate and affordable mid-size drum sander has raised the bar again with new features, including tool-less conveyor belt parallelism adjustment, depth scale on the drum height adjustment handwheel and advanced dust hood design.

“The JET 16-32 Plus Drum Sander has proven itself to be a user-friendly, precision machine with plenty of capacity to efficiently handle a wide variety of sanding jobs,” said Joan Duvall, Jet’s Senior Director of Marketing. “Our new, upgraded version is sure to become an indispensible tool in many small to mid-size woodshops, as well as enthusiasts’ home workshops.”

Special attention has been paid to conveyor belt parallelism in the new JET 16-32 model.  Parallelism adjustments of the precision-flattened, reinforced-steel belt can be made without tools by simply turning a dial located on the left side of the conveyor.   A redesigned conveyor system pulls the work piece through the sander instead of pushing it to minimize stress on the belt. The conveyor belt provides a generous 21-3/8” L x 16” D surface area to move wood beneath the sanding drum.

jet-1632-drum-sander-inuse-1

A depth scale has been added to the large handwheel on top of the sander that adjusts drum height to control the depth of material removal. This handy scale enables the operator to reset and measure the depth setting of each project. Each full turn of the crank adjusts the drum height by 1/16” for precise sanding thickness control.  Adjusting drum height and downward pressure helps alleviate snipe.

To improve dust collection, a redesigned hood features an integrated channel that mirrors the shape of the drum.  The channel directs dust and debris to the 4”-diameter, dust port on top of the hinged hood.

The sander’s open-ended design allows the JET 16-32 Plus to sand work pieces up to 32” wide by making two passes.  The machine sands material from 1/32” to 3” thick, and can safely handle pieces as short as 2 ¼”.  A convenient camber adjustment makes it easy to avoid “witness marks” on wide boards.

The JET 16-32 Plus Drum Sander incorporates two TEFC motors.  A 1-1/2HP, single- phase, 110V, 14-amp motor turns the sanding drum at 1725 RPM.  The conveyor belt is driven separately by a direct-drive, dc motor with 43 in.-lbs. of torque. This combination provides both consistent sanding power and fine control of conveyor speed.

Infinitely variable control produces conveyor feed rates of 0 to 10 fpm.  JET’s exclusive SandSmartTM control monitors the load on the drum motor and automatically regulates conveyor speed to maintain the highest feed rate.  A red indicator light warns when the depth of cut is too great or the feed rate is too fast. A safety-keyed on/off switch with overload protection is conveniently mounted on the control box next to the SandSmart control.

Patented conveyor belt TrackersTM significantly reduce the need for manual belt adjustments.  If tracking adjustments become necessary (after breaking in a new conveyor belt, for example), independent tracking adjusters on either side of the conveyor are easy to access and use.

Measuring 5” in diameter by 16” long, the sanding drum is designed for smooth running and heat dissipation.  The precision-machined and balanced, extruded aluminum drum is self-cooling to prevent heat damage to the work piece or abrasive sleeve.  Sealed and permanently lubricated, 1”-diameter ball bearings provide smooth operation and long life.  Patented abrasive take-up clips make changing abrasive sleeve quick and easy.  The drum is easily removable.

The JET 16-32 Plus Sander’s steel stand has a 20” x 37” footprint for stability and includes a storage shelf and pre-drilled holes for casters. Optional accessories include a set of infeed/outfeed tables, each measuring 16-3/4” W x 10” D, which expands the sander’s total support surface to more than 42”.  The tables are equipped with easily installed brackets.  A set of four, full- swivel, locking casters with polyurethane-covered  wheels also are optional.

The JET 16-32 Plus Drum Sander with Stand is covered by a 5-year warranty, as well as JET’s RED AssuranceTM, the industry’s most dependable service and support guarantee program.

JET Tools & Powermatic Introduce New Products for 2013

Several weeks ago I had the pleasure of traveling down to Nashville, TN to visit the folks at JET Tools and Powermatic. They were kind enough to host us at a very unique site in downtown Nashville called Fort Houston. Fort Houston is a 10,000 sq. ft. co-op with a full size wood shop, print shop, bike shop, photography studio and lots of work space. It was the perfect place to showcase several new products from JET Tools and a new table saw from Powermatic.

Powermatic PM1000 – Gold Standard Now Available for Small Shops

Powermatic has such a great reputation with wood workers who want the very best in their shops. Unfortunately not all woodworkers have the means for a really nice shop with plenty of space, power and budget. So I’m really excited to see that Powermatic has introduced the PM1000 which will allow many more woodworkers to get the “Gold Standard” on a tighter budget and it runs on just 115V service!

Powermatic PM1000 30 in Rip

Powermatic PM1000 – Cabinet Saw Features running on 115V Power Supply

The 10” PM1000 will be available in two models: The #1791000K, with cast iron tabletop and a 30” maximum rip capacity to the right of the blade, and the #1791001K model with cast iron top and extension table with 52” rip capacity to the right. The PM1000 is equipped with a blade guard assembly and riving knives to help reduce kickback.

“We see the PM1000 as the bridge for woodworkers who want to move up to a cabinet saw,” said Joan Duvall, Director of Product Management─ Wood.  “It’s loaded with features and meets the historic Powermatic gold standard in performance and value. It’s the right choice for woodworkers wanting to upgrade their current saw without overtaxing their woodworking budgets.”

I didn’t have the pleasure of trying the saw while we were there but I will say it’s one of the nicest looking (and from what I can tell nicest built) 115V table saws I’ve seen. I have no doubt this will be a very popular saw for woodworkers trying to set up small shops on a limited budget.

The Powermatic PM1000 (#1791000K, retail price $1,999.99) and (#1791001K, retail price $2,099.99) are covered by Powermatic’s 5-year warranty.  To locate a dealer, visit www.powermatic.com

JET 14 Inch BandsawJET 14″ Steel Frame Bandsaw

The start of the event in my opinion was the new 14″ Steel Frame Bandsaw from JET. Pictured at right the new bandsaw is filled with very nice features that frankly push this machine a notch or two above what I’d normally expect from the JET lineup. In fact, some of the upgrades on this bandsaw appear to push the quality much closer to the Powermatic brand.

Several features really caught my eye including:

  • The aluminum fence is exceptionally well designed and built. It provides great support for resawing and thin work.
  • Guide Wheels are VERY easy to adjust and do not require a tool.

This floor-standing bandsaw weighs 356 lbs.  Its rugged steel frame and wide base provide rigidity for smooth, stable operation and accurate cutting.  The saw’s overall dimensions are 30”L x 26”W x 74-1/2”H.

The 14” bandsaw is driven by a 1¾ hp, single-phase, 115/230V motor, which is prewired for 115V service.  Power is transmitted to the drive pulley system via a durable poly-V belt, delivering a blade speed of 3000 SFPM.

The bandsaw’s 21½” x 16” cast iron table is set at 39” from the floor, and is precisely ground to assure flatness.  The table tilts 0-45o to the right and 0-10o left, providing support for a wide range of bevel cuts.  A cast iron handwheel and large, easy-to-read scale are used to set the desired table angle.  A standard miter slot is provided to accommodate a miter gauge (optional accessory), as well as jigs and fixtures for specific projects.

An extruded aluminum fence measures 18-1/4”L x 6”H and slides on a steel guide rail.  The two-position fence can be used flat for inlays and furring strips or upright for crown molding and other materials.  The fence is fully adjustable with a laser-etched scale and micro-adjust feature.

If this new bandsaw is any indication about what the future tools from JET will look like I have a feeling we’ll be seeing lots of great improvements. Overall this bandsaw really impressed me. The JET 14” Steel Frame Bandsaw (#714500, $1,899.99) is available through www.jettools.com.

JET 8″ Bench Grinder

JET 8 Inch Bench GrinderJET’s new 8” Woodworking Bench Grinder incorporates the latest shop-friendly features and has a rugged cast iron base and motor housing for long life. The benchtop grinder includes two high-quality Norton® wheels: an 80 grit 3X Blue Ceramic Alumina K Grade wheel for coarse grinding and a 100 grit White Aluminum Oxide wheel for finish grinding.

The single-speed benchtop grinder is driven by a ½ hp, 115V single-phase induction motor.  The two 8” wheels have a 1” width and a 5/8” arbor.

Once again this new offering from JET seems to be an upgrade in quality and features over previous offerings. The JET 8” Woodworking Bench Grinder (726100, $329.99) is expected to be available in September.  To locate a dealer, visit www.jettools.com.

JET 15” Woodworking Lathe

JET 15 Inch LatheJET’s new 15” Woodworking Lathe, available in a standard version (Model JWL-1015) and variable speed version (Model JWL-1015VS), provides optimum control, as well as positive-locking indexing.  This sturdy, smooth-running 15” mini-lathe has the power, precision and versatility to turn out any number of projects, ranging from pens, bottle stoppers and drawer pulls to bowls, platters and chair spindles.

The new 15” lathe is powered by a 1/2 hp, single-phase, TEFC motor. The 4-amp, model JWL-1015VS delivers variable spindle speeds ranging from 200 to 3600 rpm.  Three speed ranges are designed to perform different types of woodturning tasks.  The slow speed range (200 to 1050 rpm) is best for detailed turnings, mid- range (300-1750 rpm) is great for sanding and finishing, and the high speed (600 to 3600) is intended for general woodturning.

These small lathes offer a small size yet they are built like much larger lathes. I’m sure these are going to be very popular with small shops.

The JET JWL-1015 Woodworking Lathe (719100, $479.99), JET JWL-1015VS Woodworking Lathe (719110, $579.99), JET JWL-1015 Bed Extension (719101, $129.99), JET JWL-1015 Stand (719102, $239.99) and JWL-1015 Stand Extension (719103, $99.99) are expected to be available in September. Packaging & Assembly

The JET JJ-6CSDX Jointer is shipped in two packages. The lower cabinet is shipped in one box and the remaining working components of the jointer are shipped in a 2nd box. Assembly took about 1 hour and I found the directions to be straight forward and easy to follow. All of the parts fit well and required almost no adjustment during assemble.

Quality Materials

The first thing I look at when evaluating new shop equipment is the quality of the materials. The JJ-6CSDX uses heavy duty cast-iron tables and fence. All of the knobs and adjustment wheels are made of metal and feel very strong and durable. The cabinet is made of heavy gauge sheet metal and the entire tool has a nice powder coat finish on it. The only plastic component on it that I did not like was the dust port which I wish was metal.

JET JJ-6CSDX Fence Straight Edge Check

Factory Set-up / Table & Fence Alignment

One of the most important factors in determining how well a joint works is how parallel the infeed table is compared to the outfeed table. In order to precisely plane a flat surface the two tables must be co-planer (parallel to each other). To check that the two tables are parallel I used a precision steel straight edge and a set of feeler gauges. I wasn’t able to detect any difference in angle between the two tables which indicates the two tables are extremely parallel.

JET JJ-6CSDX Flat Table Check with Straight Edge

I also spent time checking to make sure that each table surface was flat, and the flatness of the cast-iron fence. All three components were very flat with no detectable deviations when using a straight edge and feeler gauges. Factory set stops for tilting the fence at 45 degrees and 90 degrees were also spot on.

The last check was looking to make sure the cutting blades are parallel to the tables as well. Again using a precision straight edge and feeler gauges I wasn’t able to detect any noticeable variations, thus the blades as shipped were parallel to the table. Even though the jointer came to me perfectly set up I’d highly encourage anyone buying one to check the calibration prior to using it the first time.

JET JJ-6CSDX Front Table Hand Wheels

Cast-Iron Infeed and Outfeed Tables

The surfaces on the tables are very smooth and machined nicely. As noted above they are also very flat. Once they were coated with a few coats of wax they provide a very smooth surface that wood glides effortlessly across. Both tables ride on gib slides with appropriate screws for making adjustments. Again the tables came aligned very well so this is something that you might need to adjust down the road if things come out of alignment from use or abuse.

JET JJ-6CSDX Table Adjustments

Both tables also feature a front mounted hand wheels used to raise and lower the them. This is a great feature and allows the user to easily make adjustments. The infeed side also has a nice scale mounted to it so you can easily tell how much you’re cutting in a pass.

Another added feature on the JJ-6CSDX is a 1/2″ rabbeting ledge. This isn’t a feature I will use often but it’s sure nice to have the ability to set it up for rabbets especially if the table saw is set up for something else.

Power

The JJ-6CSDX comes with a 1 HP, 1 phase 115/230V TEFC (totally enclosed fan cooled) motor. It’s factory wired for 115 volts, however it can be re-wired to run on 230 volts. I’ve been using the jointer with the factory wired 115V setup. The motor has more than sufficient power for all the materials that I’ve used so far including: Pine, Hard Maple, Walnut, Purple Heart and Poplar. Not once has the motor seemed to bog down or feel undersized.

JET JJ-6CSDX Two Way Tilting Fence

Two-Way Tilting Fence

This jointer offers a two-way tilting fence with positive stops at 45 and 90 degrees. The fence has easy to use controls that are centrally located near the center of the jointer making it easy to quickly adjust the fence from the operating position. The fence is 4″ tall and just over 33″ long. I really like how well this fence operates and how easily it moves across the cast-iron tables. As pointed out above the fence was extremely flat and the pre-set angles were spot on from the factory.

JET JJ-6CSDX Cutter Head Knife

Cutter Head – Knives

The JJ-6CSDX comes with three (2-sided) factory installed knives on the cutter head. The factory installed knives needed no adjustments right out of the box. One of the key features for this model is the auto-set quick change knife system. Once the knives are set-up and the cams locked in place, you can install a new set of knives by simply removing the old ones and installing new ones. No calibration is needed as the quick change system holds the correct knife spacing.

JET JJ-6CSDX Knife Cam

Some people have commented that this limits the ability to have the knives sharpened forcing them to buy new knives. This to me seems like a small price to pay for being able to quickly change knives without the lengthy calibration process. The knives came extremely sharp and produced VERY smooth jointed surfaces.

The cams that allow you to adjust the knives work very well. They provide plenty of adjustment and make adjusting the blades a real breeze. The cam holes are actually short slots which provides another avenue of adjustment. This allows you to slightly offset a knicked knife to the side so the other two blades can accommodate the remaining wood. This can be a real time saver if you have some knicked knives and you’re trying to finish a project on a tight schedule.

JET JJ-6CSDX Jointer Attached To Dust Collection

Dust Collection

Jointers and planers are some of the toughest machines on dust collection systems because of the size and volume of chips that they produce. The JJ-5CSDX comes with a 4″ diameter dust port mounted on the left side of the lower cabinet / stand. The dust port is made from plastic and accepts standard 4″ diam. dust collection hoses. My jointer is connected to a 3HP Delta dust collector which has no trouble keeping up with the dust/chips produced by this jointer. The sealed cabinet does a great job keeping all the dust confined to the cabinet so it can be effectively collected.

JET JJ-6CSDX 4 Inche Dust Port

Cabinet/Stand

The motor cabinet/ stand is built of heavy gauge steel with a very nice powder coat finish. The cabinet is fully welded together providing a very nice stiff and quiet base while the machine’s motor is running. The stand holds the table surfaces at just under 32 inches and around 34 inches on my mobile stand. These are very comfortable heights for working with material on the jointer.

On/Off Switch

I only have one serious gripe with this machine and it’s the location and style of on/off switch. The on/off switch is located on the front of the motor cabinet about 12 inches below the table surface. Furthermore, the on and off switches are both push button switches. I would like to see JET use a more modern flip switch and consider mounting it at a higher level. The current switch is easy enough to turn on but I find it far more difficult to turn off especially when holding onto a large cumbersome work piece.

Performance

Tools are only as good as they perform and the JET JJ-6CSDX does a great job at that! Over the course of 6 plus months I’ve used the jointer on all kinds of material including: Pine, Hard Maple, Walnut, Purple Heart and Poplar. I’ve used it for both face and edge jointing with great success. With sharp knives installed the jointer easily cuts through soft and hardwood with ease. The jointer consistently creates straight, smooth surfaces well within the tolerances I expect for fine woodworking projects.

Overall Thoughts

The JET JJ-6CSDX 6″ Jointer is well built, fully functional and perfectly sized for home woodshops. The extra long infeed and outfeed tables ensure extra precision when handling longer material. All that combined with the quick change knife system and I think this is a very good jointer priced right for home shops. If you’re building up a home woodshop then this is definitely a jointer worth adding to the wish list. It offers great performance at a great price.

If you’d like to buy this jointer please check out the link below from Amazon. I buy a vast majority of my tools from them including large power tools and I’m always very happy with the price and service.

1221VS-DramaticBeautyLaVergne, TNJET’s new 1221VS Woodworking Lathe provides more control than other models in its class by incorporating three optimally designed speed ranges, including lower speeds for intricate, ornamental turnings.  The innovative mid-size lathe also features an enhanced control panel, exclusive ratchet belt system and forward/reverse without stopping.

The new lathe is powered by a 1 HP, 6 amp, single-phase motor that delivers variable spindle speeds ranging from 60 to 3600 rpm.  Three speed ranges are optimally designed to perform specific woodturning tasks.  The slow speed range (60 to 900 rpm) is ideal for intricate turnings, a middle range (110-1800 rpm) is great for sanding and finishing, and the high range (220 to 3600) is best for small diameter items and general woodturning.

“The lowest speed range, going all the way down to 60 rpm is something you just won’t find in competitive lathes of this size,” said Barry Schwaiger, Director of Product Development. “Turning at 60 rpm, but still having plenty of torque behind the lathe, allows you to perform tasks such as threading and ornamental work that you can’t do nearly as effectively on a machine that only goes down to 250 rpm.”

Belt changes are made quickly and easily with an innovative ratchet-style belt tension system on the 1221VS. The convenience of this new design makes it easy to configure the lathe for a wide range of turning projects.

“There’s been a rapid rise in the popularity of woodturning across the board,” says Joan Duvall, Director of Product Development – Wood.  “We know there are a lot of people looking for big-lathe capabilities in limited shop space, and the 1221VS provides a perfect solution for all of these needs.”

A digital spindle readout shows the exact rpm level for adjustment and fine-tuning.  The digital readout, on/off switch and forward/reverse switch are conveniently located on a control panel, located directly beneath the tailstock.

The lathe headstock features 24 integrated indexing positions. There is a spring-loaded spindle lock to facilitate work piece changes. The tailstock has an Acme thread and a through hole for drilling.

JET has partnered with the American Association of Woodturners to offer a complimentary one-year electronic membership to the AAW organization for purchasers of the JET 1221VS Woodworking Lathe.  This offer is available for new members only, and for purchases through December 31, 2013.  These forms are available for end users to download at http://www.jettools.com/us/en/new-products-and-offers/promotions/AAW-membership.

The JET 1221VS lathe weighs 121 lbs. and measures 33-3/5 in. L x 11 in. W x 17-7/10 in. H. It provides 21 ½ in. working distance between centers and a 12-in. swing over the bed.  Its heavy-duty, cast iron bed, headstock and tailstock provide stability, while limiting vibration.  The bedway is precision-ground to allow smooth sliding of the tail stock and tool rest. Optional accessories include a lathe stand with wide feet for stability and storage basket, a 22 in. bed extension and an extension stand.

JET 12 in. XACTA™ Saw

LaVergne, TN – Woodworkers and wood shops wanting to upgrade their table saw couldn’t have picked a better time. JET® has introduced a new cabinet saw featuring a massive 80 in. precision ground cast iron table with a beveled front edge. The JET

12 in. XACTA™ Saw has a 31-1/2 x 80 in. foot print. At nearly 630 lbs., the saw is a solid workhorse that powers through the most demanding materials with the guts to prove it.

Attention to quality and detail are evident in this industrial-rated saw, powered by a 5 hp, single-phase, 15.2-amp, 230-volt motor. At 4300 rpm, its transfer of power is constant with a poly V-belt design that reduces slippage, while minimizing vibration. The saw’s on/off button switch is within reach and provides overload protection. Two, oversized hand wheels raise/lower and bevel the 12 in. blade.

What sets JET apart from the pack is its user friendly design features such as the saw’s integrated arbor lock, which facilitates fast and easy, yet accessible, blade changes.

“This is the first JET cabinet saw to feature a standard extension made of commercial grade cast iron,” said Joan Duvall, JET’s Director of Product Management – Wood. “Once you run a few boards through the blade you’ll be hooked. What’s more, when the saw is not in use, the top serves as an efficient work surface for doing prep work or laying out plans and materials.”

This cabinet saw features a riving knife design to help reduce kickback. The integrated see-through blade guard provides a clear view of the work material being cut. Blade guard, pawls and riving knife are removable in seconds.

The saw is equipped with a 40 ½ in. XACTA commercial-grade fence that glides along the rails until locked in place. Its magnifying rail guide allows the user to pinpoint and clearly identify the desired stop. The left-tilt saw easily supports sheet goods and other dimensional lumber with its 50 in. maximum rip capacity to the right of the blade and

14 in. to the left. The saw also accommodates 8-in. dados with a 13/16 in. width. A dado insert is included with the saw. A deluxe miter gauge with adjustable positive stops helps set up cross-cutting operations and miter cuts.

The one-piece, powder-coated, steel closed cabinet houses a heavy-duty trunnion for rigidity and support. The cabinet also provides external storage for the fence and miter gauge.

Beneath the tabletop and surrounding the blade area is a collection shroud with an integrated hose for dust collection. The minimum dust collection requirement is 350. cu. ft./min. (cfm). A hinged motor cover on the cabinet provides convenient access to the motor and belts.

JET vortex cone dust collection technology separates particles from chips for higher efficiency

The new JET® Vortex™ Cone Dust Collection Systems are revolutionary single-stage machines that allow woodworkers to work longer, more efficiently and breathe easier, by capturing and removing wood chips and separating them from airborne dust.

Witness a tornado and you’ll get a sense of the cyclonic action taking place in the lower chamber or separator tank of these units as they parcel wood chips from airborne dust and funnel the particulate into the collection bag. This aerodynamically designed chamber and 14 in. cone combination is what drives the JET Vortex Cone System, enabling these machines to outperform others in the marketplace. They eliminate performance fluctuations due to premature filter clogging.

JET’s Vortex Cone technology increases efficiency by preventing 98 percent of wood chips from clinging to the canisters’ pleated filter. Now, only fine particles rise to the filter chamber, thus making manual cleanups easier without dust buildup and fewer bag changes. This action reduces health concerns by minimizing dust intake.

Revolving handles off the upper rim of the canisters function as internal filter scrubbers and when rotated, knock off excess dust from the pleated filter.

“In a category that’s been long overdue for innovation, the JET Vortex Cone technology systems represent a significant breakthrough, said Barry Schwaiger, product
manager for JET. “I can cite all the facts and statistics, but once you see these machines in operation, they sell themselves.”

There are seven JET Vortex Cone models, including three, 2-micron canister machines, one 5-micron bag system and three 30-micron bag units. Each Vortex Cone system features either a 1, 1-1/2 or 2-hp continuous-duty motor. Amp ratings range from 6 to 11, depending on model. The pre-wired dust collection systems are single-phase, with the exception of two, three-phase models (DC-1200VX-BK3, DC-1200VX-CK3). Voltage is 115/230V, 230V only and 230/460V, depending on model. Dust collection capacity is 5.3 cu. ft., and feature 1100 or 1200 cfm air flow at 4 in.

In-house tests reveal the JET Vortex Cone canister models filter 98 percent of 2-micron particles and 86 percent of 1-micron particles. How large is a micron? One micron is 0.000039 of an inch. By comparison, a human hair is 40 to 120 microns, while a period in punctuation is roughly 397 microns.

The Vortex Cone Systems’ motor features an 11-in., cast-iron impeller with fins to deliver 1100 or 1200 cfm capacity, depending on the model. These fins help keep the motor running cooler for longer life. The TEFC (totally enclosed fan-cooled) motor also features permanent lubricated bearings. Industrial quality pushbuttons on/off switches are standard equipment on all units.

The Jet Vortex Cone dust collection systems are mobile with each machine’s platform supported by four, heavy-duty, swivel-casters for easy maneuvering.

Choosing a JET Vortex System begins with evaluating each stationary tool in the shop and its cfm requirements.

Note that table saws, miter saws, shapers and band saws are rated at 350 cfm. Jointers and disc sanders come in at 450, belt sanders 550, while planers are 785 cfm.

Other factors to consider when choosing a dust collection system: Will more than one machine be operated at the same time? Will other stationary tools be added to the shop in the future?

Optional accessories to the Jet Vortex Cone Dust Collection Systems include an optional on/off radio frequency remote control.

JET provides one of the industry’s most comprehensive 5-year warranties. The company also is backed by 750 authorized service centers nationwide.
