Rockwell F80 Duotech Oscillation Sonicrafter Multitool RK5151K

Oscillating tools have quickly become a go-to tool on the jobsite for us carpenters and remodelers. While we all know that an oscillating tool works with a side-to-side movement, moving at approximately 20,000 strokes per minute, did you know that the blade oscillation is angled at approximately 3.2 degrees for optimized cutting and reduced vibration?

Rockwell DuoTechThis narrow angle of oscillation provides precise control over the tool and results in a precise cutting, grinding and sanding applications while optimizing the best angle for vibration and movement control.

The folks at Rockwell recently released their NEW Rockwell F80 Duotech Oscillation Sonicrafter which is the first oscillating tool to deploy two oscillating angles, 3.4 and 5.0 degrees.  This option of dual oscillating angles enable the tool to work harder and run faster. That’s five times faster than the basic Sonicrafter RK5121K. but what about movement and vibrations?

Why Dual Angles?

Rockwell determined that by increasing the oscillation angle, from 3.2° to 3.4 and 5.0o, they could increase the tools cutting efficiency.

As Isaac Newton taught us; “for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.”  This brief physics lesson is real in the tool world.  By increasing the blade angle, Rockwell now had to deal with more movement and unwanted vibration. To combat this, Rockwell employed a counterweight inside the tools to offset the movement, and provide a smoother, more efficient cut.

Rockwell F80 Duotch Sonocrafter MultitoolAggressive Cuts Vs. Continuous Control

Both the Sonicrafter F50 and F80 feature the industry’s-best maximum cutting load of 35 lbs. of force. These tools can be pushed harder than any other oscillating tool before the blade stalls out.

Users now have the option of selecting the 5.0o oscillating angle when projects demand faster, more aggressive cuts with quicker results or 3.4o for continuous control.

Rockwell F80 Duotch Sonocrafter MultitoolWeight and Balance

The Rockwell F80 Duotch Sonocrafter Multitool is well designed.  It weights 3.3 pounds, has a narrow sleek body and a durable , metal front end with a tool-free blade / accessory level. I’m a big fan of its 10-foot cord and its variable spped control with settings from 10,000 to 19,000 oscillations.

Performance

The Rockwell F80 Duotch Sonocrafter Multitool has a 35lb cutting load allowing you to push into your cut.  Its really does allow you to push into the work being but the tool is loud.

The tools vibration feels normal, and line of sight is excellent. I did not notice  difference when using the Dutch oscillation selector switch.

Universal FitTM Accessory System

Rockwell pioneered Universal FitTM, the industry’s first true universal accessory system, which enabled Sonicrafters to accept other major brands’ accessories without adapters. Rockwell’s universal accessories are manufactured to fit all other competitive oscillating tools, giving consumers the option of using Rockwell blades and accessories without sacrificing fit or performance.

HyperlockTM Blade Change System

Sonicrafter oscillating tools feature a spring-loaded centering mount that positively engages accessories with the help of the HyperlockTM tool-less blade change system that provides one ton of clamping force to prevent accessory slippage. Slippage can sometime be the cause of that metallic sound we often hear.

I tried using some Bosch accessory blades on the Rockwell F80 Duotch Sonocrafter Multitool with limited success.  The accessory blade did not mount onto the tools points an was only secured by the clamping force of the HyperlocalTM system.

Hyperlock is available on the new F80, F50, F30 and basic Sonicrafter model (RK5121K). It’s also featured on the 20V Sonicrafter (RK2863K).

Room For Improvement?

I’m a big fan of you get what you pay for, the Rockwell F80 Duotch Sonocrafter Multitool is priced super affordable. Unfortunately, this tool requires the user to unscrew the accessory lever and pull out a pin in order to change the blade. Rockwell needs to graduate into pin-less blade changing.  I’m sure the reason they haven’t is cost and industry patents.

There is a lot of plastic on this tool, especially the accessory level. One concern is that a solid drop on concrete could damage this level – time will tell.

The box that this tool comes in is made of thin plastic and I found it annoying that the lid comes completely off.  I’d love to see Rockwell beef up the box and add a continuous hinge.

Overall Impression

At $129 the Rockwell F80 Duotch Sonocrafter Multitool is a great bargain and a great DIY tool or starter tool.

Rockwell F80 DUOTECH Oscillation Sonicrafter

The new Rockwell® oscillating tool on the market today provides the option of two oscillating angles, 3.4 and 5.0 degrees. The F80 is the latest development in Rockwell’s evolution of oscillating tools. Dual oscillating angles enable the tool to work harder and run faster, while also providing industry breakthrough features such as HyperlockTM and true Universal FitTM.

The Sonicrafter F80 has a tapered, compact body powered by a 4.2 amp motor. Users now have the option of selecting the 5.0o oscillating angle when projects demand faster, more aggressive cuts with quicker results or 3.4o for continuous control.

“We challenge ourselves in developing products by listening to our customers in how the tools are being used and in what applications,” said Jeanne White, Rockwell’s Senior Product Manager. “With the F80 featuring two oscillating angles, users now how a choice of choosing the angle that best fits the application.”

Like the Sonicrafter F50, the F80 is five times faster than the basic Sonicrafter RK5121K. Both the Sonicrafter F50 and F80 feature the industry’s-best maximum cutting load of 35 lbs. of force. These tools can be pushed harder than any other oscillating tool before the blade stalls out.

Typically, by increasing the oscillation angle, it causes more movement and unwanted vibration. To combat this, Rockwell employed a counterweight inside the tools to offset the movement, and provide a smoother, more efficient cut.

Most oscillating tools have an oscillating angle of 3.2°. Rockwell’s fastest and most powerful Sonicrafter line expansion now includes the F80 (RK5151K) with oscillation angles of 3.4 and 5.0o, the F50 (RK5141K) at 5.0° and the F30 (RK5131K) at 4.0°. In addition, the oscillating tools incorporate electronic constant speed control that maintains the tool’s cut rate under load.

Sonicrafter oscillating tools feature a spring-loaded centering mount that positively engages accessories with the help of the HyperlockTM tool-less blade change system. Blade slippage and stopped cuts can be an issue with some manufacturers’ oscillating tools, so Rockwell introduced Hyperlock, a tool-less feature that provides one ton of clamping force to prevent accessory slippage. This is the highest accessory clamping force on any tool-less oscillating tool. Hyperlock is available on the new F80, F50, F30 and basic Sonicrafter model (RK5121K). It’s also featured on the 20V Sonicrafter (RK2863K).

Oscillating tools can handle a myriad of jobs and projects around the house and shop to save time, energy and money. However, a tool is only as good as the accessory doing the work. Several innovative accessories, including Rockwell’s line of Extended Life accessories are now available. The Extended Life accessories offer bi-metal teeth for added strength and durability.

Rockwell Announces New Brushless Tools with 20 Year Warranty

Rockwell has announced plans to provide a 20 year warranty on their new line of 20V brushless power tools. The 20 year warranty not only covers the tool, but free batteries for 20 years once the tool is registered. The 20 warranty program marks the first time in the brand’s history that such a warranty has ever been offered.

Planned obsolescence wasn’t part of the equation with Rockwell’s new 20-year warranty program.  The stout line of brushless portable power tools is built for performance and longevity. The 20V group includes a drill-driver, a 3-speed impact driver, a hammer drill and a ½ in., 3-speed impact wrench.

rockwell 20yr warranty

“These days, you’ll find a 20-year warranty on a roof, mattress, automobile and maybe new home construction, but it’s rare to find it on durable consumer goods such as power tools,” said Jeanne White, Rockwell’s Senior Product Manager. “With a 20-year life cycle, this new line of brushless tools is built to perform and last.”

Rockwell’s 20V brushless motors feature 10 times the motor life and 25 percent more power than comparable, conventional brushed motors.  Highly magnetic rare earth metals increase power output. Plus, battery run time is increased by up to 50 percent per charge versus standard brushed motors.  These brushless motors have computer-controlled power distribution, which improves motor efficiency and durability by reducing heat, friction, noise and wear.

Brushless motors are more expensive to build, due to their internal components. On average, these tools cost 15 to 30 percent more than comparable, standard brushed motors.  However, by factoring the tool’s longevity, durability, longer run time, plus Rockwell’s 20 year warranty in combination with the Free Replacement Batteries for 20 Years program once the tool is registered, the real cost difference is marginal, making brushless power tools affordable.

New Oscillating Tools Include Universal Fit™ and Hyperlock™ Tool-Free

It seems as though the race is on when it comes to oscillating multi-tools. Rockwell just announced some new features on their line-up of tools including Universal Fit™ allowing any brand of accessory to be used and Hyperlock™ Tool-Free design. Both of these new features are sure to please users as they are often the topic of debate among oscillating tool owners. The new features are being rolled out in October 2012. For more on this news please read the full press release below.

New Rockwell Oscillating Multi-Tools Raise Bar with Universtal Fit and Hyperlock Tool-Free Design

Charlotte, N.C. – Rockwell®, a pioneer of affordable oscillating multi-tools, has raised the bar again by providing innovative solutions to key design issues that continue to vex competitive brands. These major refinements include the industry’s first Universal Fit™ system that enables three new Sonicrafters®, as well as a Shop Series Sonictool™, to accept other brands’ accessories without adapters. In addition, a new assortment of Rockwell universal accessories is designed to fit competitive multi-tools.

The convenient new Hyperlock™ tool-free (quick-release) feature on two new Sonicrafters, RK5139K and RK5140K, provides one ton of clamping force to prevent slippage of blades and other accessories. This is the highest accessory clamping force on any tool-free oscillating tool. So no more stopped cuts because the blade slips in the tool.

“The exclusive Universal Fit system, plus the Hyperlock tool-free design on selected models, make the new Sonicrafters and Sonictool the most versatile and convenient oscillating multi-tools available to homeowners and professionals,” said Pete Denley, Rockwell product manager. “In light of our total commitment to the Universal Fit system, all previous Rockwell oscillating tool and accessory kits will be discontinued with the new program’s launch.”

Rockwell also has ramped up the amps in its new corded oscillating multi-tools, increasing their power and cutting efficiency. The Sonicrafter X2 (RK5140) leads the way with an increase from 2.3 to 3.0 amps. The Sonicrafter (RK5139) jumps from 2.3 to 2.5 amps and the Shop Series Sonictool increases from 2.0 to 2.3 amps.

Universal Fit Tools and Accessories

Most other oscillating multi-tool brands only accept their own proprietary accessories. So users are stuck with an expensive proprietary system or need to drive across town to buy the one and only brand of blades that fits on their tools. Some competitors offer adapters to help make their tools compatible with other brands, but the competitor’s adapters still don’t allow their tools to accept any brand of blade or accessory available.
The new Rockwell Universal Fit tools and accessories are a win-win. New Sonicrafters and Sonictool accept Universal Fit accessories, as well as prior-model Rockwell hex-shape accessories and competitive accessories.

Unlike other no-name brand “universal” blades, Rockwell Sonicrafter Universal Fit accessories are designed to fit all competitors’ oscillating tools. If you buy a Rockwell Sonicrafter blade, it will be able to fit on any multi-tool you own.

New Rockwell accessory blades feature a stepped profile for true flush-cutting applications, unlike flat blades that come up short. In addition, technical improvements made to the precision end-cut blades allow for over two times the life of previous precision end-cut blades.

Hyperlock Tool-Free Design

Since oscillating multi-tools accomplish a variety of jobs, accessories are changed frequently. With some multi-tools, a retaining bolt must be removed with an Allen key to make the swap. In contrast, Hyperlock tool-free design on selected Sonicrafter models takes seconds – simply release a top-mounted lever, switch accessories and press the lever back down.

Slippage is a crucial issue and common complaint. Some tool-free oscillating tools have inadequate holding power, which can cause accessories to slip and stop functioning while in the middle of a critical cut. These brands incorporate a series of small holes in the accessory that fit over indexing pins on the tool to help minimize slippage. However, the amount of friction exerted by conventional quick-release systems often is inadequate to prevent slippage and malfunctioning.

Sonicrafter’s Hyperlock tool-free design adds one ton of clamping force to the equation. Sonicrafter with Hyperlock has the strongest holding power of any tool-free oscillating tool, which secures accessories to keep them functioning smoothly.

Rockwell SheetMaster – The JawHorse’s Big Brother

A couple of years ago I was so impressed with the release of Rockwell’s JawHorse that I named it one of my top tool picks for that year. Earlier this year Rockwell announced plans for the updated tool called the Rockwell SheetMaster Model RK9002.

The all new model was redesigned so that it can accommodate full size sheet goods (4′ wide) right out of the box. The previous version needed an accessory (plywood clamp) in order to clamp materials that wide. This new version also includes a redesigned wheel system, beefed up legs and larger feet.

How The SheetMaster Stacks Up

Sometimes when a great product is redesigned it loses some of it’s original luster and functionality. The SheetMaster bucks that trend and offers a refined design that makes it a must have tool for almost any workshop or garage.

This new version weighs about 10lbs more than it’s predecessor which is one of the very few complaints that I have. While it is rather heavy the weight certainly pays off when it comes to it’s rugged performance. The weight also helps keep the SheetMaster stable when it’s loaded up with a full sheet of plywood like I’ve done in the photo above.

Being able to clamp a full sheet of plywood into the SheetMaster is certainly it’s best feature. In my garage I keep a 4’x4′ (1/2 sheet) piece of 3/4″ plywood leaning up against the wall and the SheetMaster down there as well. I can quickly create a temporary workbench that gives me a great work surface.

The only issue I have with the SheetMaster (and this is a very small detail) are the folding legs and the locking mechanism. On a few occasions the leg didn’t fully lock into position (now that I pay attention to that I make sure it’s locked). This resulted in me tipping it over twice which wasn’t fun! Again this is probably as much user error as it is the locking device.

Overall the SheetMaster works just like my old JawHorse. If you don’t own one of these I HIGHLY recommend you do. Priced around $200 this is a tool that will get lots of use in your shop, garage or even jobsite.

If you’d like to buy the SheetMaster you can by following this link: Rockwell RK9002 JawHorse Sheetmaster

Rockwell Versacut Mini Circular Saw With Innovative Blade Guard

Charlotte, N.C. — The new Rockwell® Versacut™ mini circular saw is capable of tackling most tasks typically handled by circular saws. This compact multi-functional saw is lightweight, balanced, powerful, precise and easy to use.

Unlike conventional circular saws with retractable blade guards, Versacut ensures one hand operation because it features an inner and outer blade guard design that isolates the blade, so there’s no blade guard to retract. Plus, the saw’s shoe, or base plate, provides a clear view of where the blade enters the work piece. This, mini circular saw delivers quick and precise cuts, even plunge cuts, in a variety of materials.

“Rip a sheet of plywood with this lightweight saw, and you may never go back to a circular saw,” said Jeanne White, Rockwell’s senior product manager. “We see it as the go to saw, for a variety of reasons. There’s no need to drag out the bulky circular saw or set up the miter saw. Change the blade and Versacut cuts though wood, flooring, plastic, ceramic tile, slate, aluminum and sheet metal goods.”

With a 3-3/8 in. diameter blade and a maximum depth of cut of 1-1/16-in., the versatile compact mini saw weighs only 4 lbs. Changing blades is easy. All the user needs to do is loosen the blade screw with the key that is provided. Versacut’s body has a concave midsection with an overmold comfort grip for one-handed operation.

The saw’s motor is located in the rear of the tool, which perfectly balances the cutting head. Versacut has a nylon-composite body and is equipped with a Laserguide™ line that follows the path of the blade and provides a point of reference when cutting. The laser has a separate on/off switch, located on the tool’s body. An easy-to-set depth-of-cut knob raises and lowers the blade in 1/8-in. increments.

The single-speed, 4-amp saw has a no-load speed of 3500 rpm. The trigger with lock-off switch is conveniently located beneath the barrel of the saw. In addition, Versacut has a dust extraction port to help clear the work area and a parallel edge guide clamp to set up accurate rip cuts.

The Rockwell Versacut Saw (RK3440K, $129.99) includes the saw, three blades, parallel guide, vacuum adapter, a non-marring base cover and a storage bag. An optional 3-pc. blade set (RW9232K, $39.99) also is available. Versacut blades including a fast-cut, 24-tooth, carbide-tipped blade (RW9231, $19.99), smooth-cutting, 44-tooth, high-speed-steel blade (RW9229, $12.99), and a Diamond tile cutting blade (RW9228, $16.99) are sold separately. The Rockwell Versacut Saw will be available in July 2011 at rockwelltools.com and other online Websites, including amazon.com. It is expected to be available through various local retailers such as Lowes, Menards and independent hardware and lumber yards.

New Rockwell 3RILL Triple-Function 12-Volt Driver

Charlotte, N.C. — Professionals who want to save steps or use powerful lightweight tools should look at the new Rockwell® 12V LithiumTech™ 3-in-1 3RILL™. Homeowners upgrading their power tools or choosing one for their first home will love this 3-in-1 driver as well. Not only is this tool loaded with awesome driving power at 800 in.-lbs. of torque, it delivers the functions of a 2-speed drill/driver, screwdriver with adjustable clutch and impact driver rolled into one.

Drill holes in wood or metal, drive large bolts and lag screws into wood or composite decking and sink drywall screws all day with the same tool. There are no trips to the tool box or return visits up the ladder. Everything the user needs is in the palm of his or her hand.

This multi-tasking tool saves time and energy and, when it’s time to recharge, the Energy-Star-rated fast charger goes green in 30 minutes. In fact, after 15 minutes the battery reaches 75 percent capacity. The Rockwell LithiumTech fast charger even has a universal USB port to charge cell phones, MP3 players or laptops.

Ultra-compact, lightweight and powerful, the Euro-styled 3-in-1 3RILL is one of the latest tools in Rockwell’s extended family of 12-volt LithiumTech power tools, which includes the H3™ Rotary Hammer Drill, Sonicrafter®, Drill/driver, Screwdriver, Flashlight and Impact Driver.

The 3RILL has a no load speed of 0-2200 rpm, 0-600 rpm in screw mode and 0-3000 impacts-per-minute (ipm). The single-pole battery’s capacity is 1.3 Ah. Weighing 2.7 lbs. New JawHorse Sheetmaster Clamps Sheet Goods Up To 49 Inches Wide

I’m a HUGE fan of the Rockwell JawHorse so when I recently heard about the newest version that holds sheet goods I was very excited. Read all about their new JawHorse Sheetmaster below:

Charlotte, N.C. — Let’s face it — the Rockwell® JawHorse® is a tough act to follow. This iron horse from Rockwell took the home improvement and remodeling industry by storm with its incredible clamping force of one metric ton and ability to bear loads up to 600 lbs. Add a host of accessories from a Welding Jaw to a Log and Chainsaw Vise, and this three-legged workhorse transforms itself into the complete shop work station.

The new JawHorse sheetmaster does everything the JawHorse can do and then some. It is the latest addition to the JawHorse family. Out of the carton, the JawHorse sheetmaster accommodates 4×8 plywood sheets without additional accessories or tools for assembly. Its clamping capacity of 0-49 in. wide, handles standard sheet goods, irregular shapes and other workpieces. Like the JawHorse, it also exerts one metric ton (2,200 lbs.) of clamping force and can support 600 lbs.

“The JawHorse nation spoke and we answered,” said Jeanne White, senior product manager for Rockwell. “Sheetmaster was a logical JawHorse transformation and for those new to the product, it’s the start of an all-in-one workstation for any number of projects.”

Builders, remodelers, do-it-yourselfers, hobbyists and crafters often need an extra set of hands to juggle projects, such as hanging doors, supporting sheet rock overhead, installing crown molding, sanding, scraping and painting operations, sawing 4×8 plywood sheets or holding odd-shaped objects.

Other notable upgrades additions to the SheetMaster include its auto-locking leg latches, which speed the unit’s setup and teardown. With these latches, all the user needs to do is slide a button to release the front legs. The sheetmaster added some heft, and outweighs the JawHorse by nearly 10 pounds. The difference in weight triggered changes to the workstation’s mobility. In place of the JawHorse’s cylinder roller, the sheetmaster features two integrated inline skate-type wheels that carry the workstation over hard surfaces and varied terrain such as jobsites.

A new rear foot on the sheelmaster has a non-slip grip, plus the base of the foot is wider to minimize sinking into soft ground. This third leg has a built-in hand grip, which doubles as a carrying handle for easy transport from one location to another.
The JawHorse sheetmaster is constructed of heavy-gauge, powder-coated steel throughout, and weighs 52.9 lbs. Its wide-stance tripod design keeps all three non-slip feet firmly on the ground, even when the surface is uneven.

In operation, the sheetmaster has the same patented foot pedal design as the JawHorse that clamps the workstation’s jaws by 1 in. with each stroke of the pedal. This pumping action compresses the jaws until the workpiece is secured. The foot pedal is equipped with a stirrup to prevent the user’s foot from slipping. The JawHorse sheetmaster’s, 8 in. x 3 in. steel jaws open to 49 in.

JawHorse sheetmaster measures 46 in. L x 35-1/2 in. W x 34-3/4 in. H when opened. When not in use, it folds to a compact 37-1/4 in. L x 14-5/8 in. W x 13-7/8 in. H. It fits conveniently into vehicles, truck beds, closets, workshops or garages.
The JawHorse sheetmaster takes the place of workbenches, stands, saw horses, vices and clamps. You can set up shop at the job site or in the garage.

The sheetmaster is also is ideal for apartment dwellers and homeowners who don’t have a workshop or garage. Store it in a closet, and when needed for projects, set it up on the patio or in the driveway.

The JawHorse sheetmaster (RK9002, $219.99) is available on rockwelltools.com and other popular websites. It also is expected to be available through local retailers in June 2011.

Enhance the usefulness of the sheetmaster by adding exclusive add-on accessories designed to perform specific tasks, such as sawing logs and timber, welding and more. Customize the JawHorse sheetmaster by selecting from the following full line of optional accessories (sold separately):

  • Log and Chainsaw Jaw (RK9101, $39.99) – features steel jaws that hold logs and timber up to 12 in. diam.
  • Saddlebag (RK9102, $19.99) – holds tools and accessories within easy reach.
  • Welding Jaw (RK9100, $99.99) – secures welding work.
  • Tool Tray (RK9205, $24.99) Snaps into sheetmaster for ready tool access

Rockwell BladeRunner Model RK7320

There’s been quite a bit of “Buzz” lately over a new tool from Rockwell, the Rockwell BladeRunner. I’ve been testing the BladeRunner for a few weeks now and wanted to share my thoughts on this cool new tool.

The BladeRunner is an interesting tool that combines features of a table saw, scroll saw and jig saw into a tool that can cross cut, rip and scroll through varying materials like wood, plastic and metal.

If you were to tip your jig saw upside down and mount it in your router table you’d have a tool that is quite similar to this new offering.

Specifications

  • Voltage: 120V ~ 60Hz
  • Amperage: 5.5A
  • No-load speed: 800-2800/ min
  • Stroke Length: 7z8″
  • Table Size: 17″ x 15 3/4″
  • Weight: 17.6 lbs
  • Cutting Capacity: Wood: 1-1/2″, PVC Pipe 1-1/4″, Aluminum 3/8″, Steel 1/8″, Ceramic 3/8″

Features

  • Ready – Quick release wall mount. It’s always ready to cut or you can take it to the job site
  • Cut – Change the blade not the tool. Scroll cuts, rip cuts, circle cuts. Cut metal, wood, tile and more.
  • Go – Attaches to any shop vac for less cleanup and hassle

BladeRunner at a Glance

The Rockwell BladeRunner is a sturdy, well built benchtop tool. As you can see in the photos it has a sturdy base supported on rubber feet. The base supports a brushed metal top that offers a nice smooth working surface. The table measures 17″ x 15 3/4″ with two T Slots to guide the miter gauge.

The BladeRunner is completely portable and built to support it’s mobility. There is a storage drawer for all your blades, a clamp to hold the miter gauge on the side of the base, a cord storage area and lastly a comfortable handle for carrying it.

The BladeRunner motor is mounted to the bottom of the table inside the base. The over the top blade guard easily adjusts for varying thickness materials. The blade guard also includes a port for connecting a shop vac for dust control.

Cutting / Blade System

The BladeRunner really shines with it’s innovative use of jig saw blades. It uses the ever popular T Shank jig saw blades which can be purchased at almost any hardware store. By allowing a standard blade system to be used Rockwell has created a tool that doesn’t require special order blades. This is a HUGE benefit in my opinion and one that every user will truly appreciate.

Installation and removal of blades is very easy. In the photo above you’ll see that the upper blade guard has been moved out of the way, the lower table/blade guard has been removed and my hand is sliding the blade release to the right. Now the blade can be removed or installed. Then the process is reversed. It really takes just a few seconds to replace a blade and no tools are required.

There is a nice blade storage drawer located just below the table top. The blades snap into small holder “fingers” which keeps them from rattling around. The drawer seems a bit flimsy and could benefit from some type of latch to keep the drawer securely closed.

Variable Speed Motor

The Rockwell BladeRunner is powered by a 5.5 Amp motor which produces a variable blade speed between 800 and 2,800 strokes per minute. The blade speed is controlled by a dial switch on the lower based.

I found the motor to have plenty of power and it operates at a fairly tolerable noise level. The variable speed feature is an extremely important feature for this tool so that you can cut different materials effectively.

Miter Gauge – Rip Fence

The BladeRunner has a pretty decent miter gauge that doubles as a rip fence. I really like that the miter gauge is mostly metal (compared to many other benchtop tools today that are 100% plastic). The miter gauge is easy to adjust and also includes an adjustable fence. The miter gauge can also be used as a rip fence when the saw is set up to rip materials.

Overall Impression

The Rockwell BladeRunner is a very cool tool! This tool is certainly not a replacement for a nice table saw, jig saw or even scroll saw. However, it will do a fine job on smaller projects that require those type of tools.

The BladeRunner cuts very well. It cuts a plumb, square cut and the miter gauge works very well. I tested the BladeRunner cutting several different material types. I used it to cross cut, cut miters, rip and lastly for some scroll cutting. The BladeRunner really did well cutting curved shapes. I like that it has a stiffer jig saw blade compared to some of the scroll saws that I’ve used in the past.

Overall I think the BladeRunner is a great tool. If you have a small shop and want to be able to do projects that require a scroll saw then I’d highly recommend checking this tool out. You’ll benefit from the other capabilities that it offers.

Priced under $200 the BladeRunner is a good value. The BladeRunner is available at a number of hardware stores and online. If you’d like to purchase it then I recommend you check out the following link:

Rockwell Model RK4246K Random Orbit Sander

Rockwell recently sent me one of their new sanders to try. The RK4246K 5″ Random Orbit Sander to be exact. Over the last year I’ve become a really big fan of Rockwell Tools quality and performance. Needless to say I wasn’t shocked when I was told this little sander is a “hidden jewel”. Orbital sanders are extremely useful and a tool that every shop should have. So if you’re in the market for a sander this is certainly one to consider.

Read on and learn more about the RK4246K.

Rockwell 5" Random Orbit Sander

Rockwell RK4246K Review

The Rockwell 5″ Orbital Sander sure does look like some sort of high tech equipment with it’s fancy looking dust collection system. I’ll be honest the flashy dust collection system really looked like a gimmick but I was very wrong!

Sanding Pads

The RK4246K uses standard hook and loop sanding pads with 8 dust port holes. Nothing new about how these work or how to install the pads. I like that it’s a standard pad size and available at any big box store or local hardware store.

Motor/Power

The Rockwell Random Orbital Sander offers a variable speed adjustment that adjusts the vibrations from 5000-12000 oscillations per minute. The sander has an orbital diameter of 3/32″.

The tools weighs only 3.1 lbs and boasts a powerful 2.8 amp motor. I really like having a variable speed control on these sanders as it gives you much better performance with varying materials and grits. The variable speed dial is located on the rear of the grip out of the way from being inadvertently adjusted. The on/off switch has a nice soft dust cover on it and it’s located on the front of the grip for easy access.

Dust Collection System

For me the “hidden jewel” here is the dust collection system on the RK4246K. While most random orbital sanders on the market use a simple dust bag the Rockwell 5″ Random Orbital Sander uses the CDS or Cyclonic Dust/Air Separator. The technology here is much like that famous yellow vacuum system that we see on TV all the time. While this may look like a gimmick I’m here to tell you otherwise.

The RK4246K really impressed me with it’s ability to collect a vast majority of the dust I was producing. If you look closely at the photo above you’ll see a 2 inch wide piece of Cambara wood that I sanded on top of a finished oak table. You’ll notice there is no dust on the table top! Why is that so impressive? Think about the fact that I’m sanding a piece of wood that’s much narrower than the 5″ sanding surface which means not all of the dust collection holes are covering the surface. Pretty impressive in my mind!

To remove the dust you simply open a little door in the CDS. As shown in the photo above the door has a rubber gasket that keeps an air tight seal. You can see in the photo how all the very fine dust stuck to the sides of the container from static. I’m very impressed with their CDS and can’t wait to see it show up on other tools.

Storage Case

If I can find one thing to complain about it’s the storage case. While the storage case offers a rugged compact case I was not happy with the case latches. More and more tool companies are switching over to this all plastic cases with plastic latches. If you look at the adjacent photo you’ll see the plastic latch in question. The latch is very difficult to open. It’s so stiff that it actually hurt my fingers repeatedly opening it.

I’m sure over time the latch will probably loosen a bit and be easier to use. Any I don’t think this small problem is worthy of much complaint. What I hope is the tool companies take notice and find better latches (even if I need to pay a few more bucks for it).

Overall Impression

The Rockwell 5″ Random Orbital Sander (RK4246K) really impressed me. With a retail price of around $60 this little sander definitely exceeded my expectations. The dust collection system sets a new standard on what I now expect from my small sanding tools. If you are in the market for a random orbital sander then this model needs to be on your list.
