Overall Power & Performance

The true test of a snowblower is wet snow and luckily (or unluckily) we get plenty of that in Cape Cod where we tested out the Ryobi RY408150 snow blower. We used this to clear 6″-8″ of heavy wet snow and it easily threw the white stuff 35+ feet when needed. This Ryobi 40V 22-inch Snowblower sports a high-torque, brushless motor that self regulates voltage to maintain consistent power throughout the battery run-time. We varied the auger power/speed and the chute top angle to max out around 35-40 ft of max distance. Why does this matter? This allowed us to throw snow across our driveway and/or far enough straight ahead to not double clear the snow. It gives you more options when clearing snow.

Run-time

One of the positive surprises of this snowblower was the run-time. On the above-mentioned snow, we found the included 2x 8 Ah batteries actually allowed us to clear snow for about 35 mins total before running out. This slightly exceeded the stated 30 mins and represents a 17% performance increase over what we expected. More importantly, we had enough run-time to finish clearing our main (gravel) driveway that is approximately 12 ft wide x 30 ft long. This Ryobi 40V 22-inch Snowblower has 4 battery spaces; 2 for active batteries and 2 storage spaces (the 2x 6Ah batteries were ones I already had).

Shear Pin Replacement

Fortunately (at least for review purposes) we did shear a shear bolt while testing out this snowblower. It gave us a chance to test out the shear pin replacement factor and it was not more complicated than required. We appreciated that Ryobi supplied an extra set (4 bolts) or replacement shear pins. And we really appreciated that there was an integrated and easily accessible storage spot between the chute and control panel. We sheared the pin when a few pieces of larger crushed rock got caught between the auger and housing which is not a knock on this snowblower as it comes with the territory of having a crushed rock driveway vs. paved.

LED Light

The placement and brightness of the LED were both effective and appreciated. We did a second clearing just after dusk to specifically test the night operation of the snowblower and it worked great. The LED light is not a full light bar. It is just a centrally mounted LED assembly, but still proved adequate for homeowner/residential use. There is no option to turn off the light.

Control Panel Design & Overall Ergonomics

The overall design of the Ryobi 40V 22-inch Snowblower is pretty standard. It has bottom mounted skid shoes to allow for depth settings on pavements or hard ground surfaces. These are made of heavy-duty plastic as opposed to steel so, while less expensive to replace, have the potential of becoming brittle and breaking in the extreme cold. There is a lever-style control for the chute top angle (controls throw distance) on the top control panel. It was easy to operate with gloves and preferred over a manual adjustment design. There is also a crank-style lever underneath the handle assembly used to adjust the chute throwing direction. This was preferred to other crank handle-style chute controls we’ve tested on other snowblowers.

While the auger and self-propelled drive levers are a standard, handle integrated design, we did run into issues with them during use. In particular, we had to clean out frozen/packed snow accumulation approximately 10 mins into our first run on 6″ heavy snow. The snow build up prevented the plastic handle from fully depressing the activation switch on the bottom of the control assembly, pictured below, preventing the auger from engaging. This was an easy fix but unnecessarily frustrating issue.

We appreciated the self-propelled power but found the lower end speed setting to still be slightly faster than desired. Of note, with a plastic body composition and total weight of 136 lbs, there was a learning curve on gravel surfaces to keeping the auger intake from getting stuck and the tires from spinning. The all-steel auger and intake housing design meant that the high wear components (minus the skid shoes) are rugged and able to clear packed snow and intermittent ice chunks as expected.

Snowblower Safety Features

This Ryobi 40V 22-inch Snowblower has the standard style cleaning tool integrated into the tool body housing. This is a standard yet essential feature as every year there are multiple instances of snow blower operators losing fingers from cleaning out clogged chutes using their hands. It stayed securely in place and was easy to remove and store again.

One of the major benefits of switching to a cordless snowblower is the decrease in noise and fumes. The Ryobi RY408150 snowblower exemplifies these traits. We used it without hearing protection as the only real source of noise is the auger churning through snow. And even then, we were able to have a conversation without yelling. The lack of fumes and post-use ear ringing are real benefits and fall into the long-term safety category.

Final Thoughts | Ryobi 40V 22-inch Snowblower

The Ryobi 40V 22-inch Snowblower (model RY408150) is a mid-sized yet powerful option with basic features and overall solid performance. It is ideally designed for small-mid sized paved driveways and sidewalks. It provides straightforward adjustability with a solidly performing motor. The run-time with the provided 8Ah batteries was on par with the manufacturers advertised performance and sufficient for most of the snow blowing we used it for. At $1200, which is an average-range price, we’d like to see a more robust design in the lever-based auger and self-propelled controls though. The decreased noise and fumes are huge benefits to a cordless snowblower. If you regularly snow blow, and already have Ryobi 40V tools, then this is a no brainer.

Ryobi 40V HP Battery Kinetic Log Splitter Review

Brushless Kinetic Log Splitter

4.5/5
Manufacturer: Ryobi
Model number: RY40740
Price: $999.00
Power source: 40V HP Battery
The Ryobi Model Model RY40740 is the world’s first battery-powered kinetic log splitter! This tool review will discuss the benefits as well as the disadvantages of the Ryobi 40V HP battery-powered log splitter. Overall this tool is an outstanding option for homeowners. It is compact, portable, and requires far less maintenance than traditional log splitters. Additionally, it splits wood faster than a hydraulic log splitter and is more productive. Ryobi sent us this splitter for the review process and it became an immediate hit amongst all the members of the crew.

A battery-powered log splitter is not a tool that was on my radar. However, while browsing the Ryobi website I came across the Model RY40740. At first, I scoffed at the idea of a battery-powered machine being worthwhile. I am somewhat of a purist when it comes to processing firewood. Splitters in my mind need hydraulic systems powered by gas engines with rugged pump valves to be useful. The Ryobi eliminates all of that!

Ryobi Log Splitter Specifications

  • Splitting Force: 12 Tons
  • Cycle Time: 2 Seconds
  • Maximum Log Diameter: 10″
  • Maximum Log Length: 20″
  • Weight: 177 Lbs.
  • Warranty: 5 Year Limited

How Does it Work?

The Ryobi holds the crown of being the first battery-powered kinetic log splitter. Electric log splitters have been commercially available for decades and farmers and mad scientist mechanics have been building them in barns for even longer. However, the 40V HP splitter is the first machine to feature a dedicated battery-powered system. Furthermore, the 40V HP system utilizes Ryobi’s vastly popular 40V lithium-ion batteries as its powerplant.

Yet a robust battery system alone wouldn’t be enough to power a traditional-style log splitter. Traditional splitters rely upon hydraulic fluid to push a ram forward through a cylinder to then split a piece of wood. This is a slower process and requires a great deal of power and a very strong pump to accomplish. If you are interested in learning more about hydraulic splitters, you can read more here. Ryobi took a completely different approach.

The plastic housing was removed for the photo. It is not recommended to run the machine with the housing removed.

The 40V HP splitter features a flywheel system that utilizes kinetic energy to shoot a steel ram forward. The ram travels with such speed and velocity that it will split the piece of wood quickly and look awesome while doing it! As the ram extends, it stretches out coil springs that are attached to the bottom portion. Once the ram fully extends, these springs automatically retract it backward. A typical hydraulic log splitter will have a total cycle time of the ram system that is usually over ten seconds. In contrast, the Ryobi has a two-second cycle time! The kinetic system was the perfect platform that is energy efficient enough to be battery-powered.

The flywheel assembly and ram sit on top of a steel box beam. The ram runs across the top of the beam on roller guides. At the end of the beam is a vertical wedge which is stationary. There are two side rails on the side of the beam that extend down to form handles for transporting the machine. These rails also act as a cradle for the log to sit on.

Kinetic log splitters are not a new concept. They have long been praised for having fast cycle times, being lighter and more portable, and also being durable and reliable. The Ryobi 40V HP builds on that lineage with the added convenience of battery power.

Ryobi RY40740 Splitter Controls

The Ryobi features simple controls that are easy to operate. An oversized power button is located on the top of the machine’s housing. Due to the speed of the machine and the fast cycle time, it is imperative to keep your hands off of the wood that is going to be split. A two-second cycle time does not allow much room for error. To keep all ten fingers attached to your hands, Ryobi included a safety bypass lever in addition to the splitter control lever. The operator must have a hand on each of these control levers to actuate the splitter as an extra level of safety. The operator must also position themselves at the rear of the machine to properly operate the controls. This is a well-thought-out system to enhance user safety.

Occasionally, kinetic log splitters like the Ryobi will stall out. A very dense or knotty piece of wood may cause the ram to bounce off the face of the wood. When this happens, the ram knocks itself out of sync to preserve the drive assembly. To reset it, two reset buttons must be pushed simultaneously on the top of the machine. This gets everything lined up and ready to work again.

Splitting Capability

Ryobi rates the 40V HP splitter for wood with a maximum width of 10″ and a maximum length of 20″. The 10″ diameter rating is ideally suited for smaller trees and logs to make fireplace or firepit-sized pieces. I found the Ryobi splitter to excel when working with pieces this size. However, I also wanted to push the splitter to its limits. I often receive deliveries of “tree service” wood from arborist friends of mine. These loads often contain oversized pieces from takedown work. During the Ryobi testing period, I was working on a large 28″ diameter ash log. I would not expect the Ryobi to split a piece this large, but I quartered the round into more manageable-sized pieces.

The Ryobi is fully capable of splitting pieces larger than 10″. However, it often needs more than one hit from the ram. Think of it like a boxer setting up a punch combo. The first hit cracks and stuns the opponent and the follow-up hits finish it off. I used the Ryobi in a variety of wood species including maple, oak, and hickory. The machine maintained its fast cycle times and power regardless of the species. I would strongly recommend “reading” your pieces of wood while splitting. Examine the grain structure and look for knots. By rotating the piece or working around the knots, the splitter is less likely to stall and the operator will be able to split more efficiently with fewer interruptions.

Ryobi Battery-Powered Log Splitter Run-time

The Ryobi splitter is available as a kit with a single 4.0 Ah battery and charger. During testing I used the 4.0 Ah battery as well as a new 6.0 Ah battery that Ryobi sent. With a fully charged 6.0 Ah battery, I was able to complete a total of 46 minutes of continuous splitting. I staged a large pile of rounds for this and constantly fed the machine with minimal downtime. I was completely blown away by the performance of the machine on a single battery charge! What is even more impressive is the amount of wood I was able to split during that time frame. With a two-second cycle time, I had to hustle to keep the Ryobi fed. Overall I filled the bed of my Polaris Ranger to the point that it was overflowing during this test.

The 4.0 Ah battery was able to split an overflowing 10-yard wheelbarrow load of wood on a single charge. Based upon this, the 4.0 Ah battery would be more than enough power to keep a fire pit fed for a weekend or periodically split in the evening to prepare for the fall/winter burning seasons. I used a Ryobi 40V Dual Port Rapid Charger with both batteries. This charger allowed one battery to completely recharge in the time it took me to deplete the other. This combo of batteries with a rapid charger would allow for a full day of splitting with minimal downtime.

Mobility and Portability

The compact design of the Ryobi makes it easy to transport. The front legs act as handles and there are solid plastic wheels on the rear of the machine. This allows the splitter to be moved like a wheelbarrow. The machine can also be stood up for storage. The 40V HP Splitter weighs a total of 177 Lbs. Two people can easily load the splitter into a pickup truck bed for transport. There is no towing option for the splitter currently.

Unfortunately, the high center of gravity on the splitter makes it prone to tipping over while moving. The small plastic wheels are unstable in off road conditions and the splitter fell over more than once while I was transporting it to my different splitting areas.

Another downfall of such a compact design is the work height. The beam of the splitter is less than a foot off the ground, which is convenient for lifting heavy pieces of wood, but forces the operator to crouch down or work on one knee. Using the machine for extended periods of time may result in back and leg fatigue. To alleviate this, I would suggest positioning the splitter on a raised platform or possibly a cart. I plan to mill a large log in half to act as a pedestal for the splitter to sit on and my back is already thanking me.

Overall Impressions

A battery-powered log splitter is not a tool that I saw coming, but I am very glad that it is here. The Ryobi 40V HP kinetic log splitter is an outstanding option for homeowners and hobbyists who are looking for a portable and easy-to-use machine without the hassle of gas-powered engine maintenance and bulky hydraulic systems. More importantly, it is fun to use! As the ram shoots forward to split a piece of wood it makes an incredible POW! and then immediately retracts, just as fast as it started. Like a professional boxer or mixed martial artist throwing jabs and punches.

The compact size makes it easy to store and move around and did I mention less maintenance? The only maintenance I would suggest is keeping the box beam clear of built-up debris and also spraying lubricant on the ram rollers. Less resistance on these parts will enhance the lifespan.

The Ryobi is well-suited for homeowners who need to split smaller quantities of firewood for fire pits, fireplaces, small wood stoves, or for cooking. It makes a great travel companion too for remote campsites or cabins to help process campfire wood. Additionally, I would strongly suggest the Ryobi 40V HP splitter to anyone who receives wood deliveries for heating that need to be re-split. Firewood pieces produced by commercial splitters are often too large for small fireplaces or stoves. Homeowners will often need to re-split these pieces down to size with a maul or other tools. The Ryobi can be operated inside a garage or basement to do these re-splits with no hazardous fumes or excessive engine noise.

Price and Availability

The Ryobi battery-powered log splitter is currently available exclusively from the Home Depot. The kit option includes the splitter with charger and one 4.0 Ah battery for $999.00. A bare tool option will be available soon for $899.00. Overall I think is a good value on a very versatile machine. The Ryobi is faster and more rugged than any other commercially available electric homeowner machine I have seen. The kinetic system offers power and performance above almost anything else on the market. Combine this with the 40V HP battery system and it is a great option for a variety of users. I recommend this option to anyone who doesn’t want to deal with a gas splitter. It is also faster and more potentially productive than any hydraulic splitter in the same price range.

Out-of-the-Box Assembly

The Ryobi Speed Bench came unassembled and required about 10 minutes to put together.  Inside the box were the workstation pieces, 2 LINK assembly rails, 1 LINK double organizer bin, the hardware, two large rubberized wheels, and a manual. The assembly was relatively easy to complete and only required a Philips screwdriver and a couple of wrenches.

First Impression

There are four things to look for when it relates to a good workstation. They are pre-assembly requirements, durability, portability, and the amount of work surface they provide. Three of these [excluding portability] can be determined right off the bat when unboxing.

Upon first glance, the new Ryobi Speed Bench Mobile Workstation exceeds expectations that are usually connected with Ryobi’s reputation of just being the “power tools sold at the local Home Depot”. Due to the speed bench’s adaptability and well-built design, we feel you might be seeing this innovative mobile workstation on both job sites/workshops as well as in DIY enthusiasts’ garages.

Ryobi has stepped up their game with this new innovative workstation

Transforms From Cart to Workbench

The Speed Bench Mobile Workstation can be set up effortlessly with one fluid motion, allowing users to transport and set up where needed. Simply depress a locking mechanism with your foot and push the cart handle down in one fluid motion. This locking mechanism releases wheels and the table tilts to 180° for use as a workstation.

Locking Mechanism

The locking mechanism locks the table upright while also providing support for both the workbench and the cart operations. We found the design of the locking mechanism easy to disengage, just by tapping it with your foot. When done working, the workstation quickly folds into a cart and is easily stored or transported.

Durable Steel Frame

The robust steel frame on the STM202 is very sturdy and can support a weight capacity of 400 lbs on the workbench.  When you switch it over to the 2-wheel cart option you have a weight capacity of 300 lbs. This cart is ideal for transporting tool boxes, 50 lb bags of ice melt, and even large pieces of furniture.

Portability

The Ryobi Speed Bench comes with 10″ rubberized wheels which provide good maneuverability and portability at home and around the job site. The Speed Bench rolls easily over surfaces like grass, concrete, and gravel. The Ryobi Speed Cart’s 10-inch wheels provide plenty of space between the frame and the ground, allowing for easy maneuvering across uneven ground, including stairs.

After completing the project, users can conveniently store the Speed Bench in a garage corner to keep it out of the way. The Ryobi Speed Bench features a removable 19″ heavy-duty skid plate, which can be detached using tool-free bolts. By removing the skid plate it folds up small enough to fit under a tonneau cover in the back of a truck.

Solid Wood Work Surface

The Ryobi Speed Cart features a big workbench surface made of Parawood. Parawood is sturdy, resists warping, and provides a firm bench top surface excellent for supporting saws, clamping wood, and a variety of other applications. The surface is large enough to accommodate larger power tools.

The wooden surface measures 42″ wide and 22″ deep. We did not want to put holes in the surface to mount a miter saw with bolts and nuts, we simply used it on flat ground and just had the saw sitting on the work surface. The surface of the workstation was deep enough to hold a 12″ miter saw base without having it overhang.

Perfect for Assembly

“The Ryobi Speed Cart is an excellent mobile assembly table for a variety of projects.” On a recent project, the Speed Bench worked perfectly with the Kreg Jig system to make a headboard. The spacious, solid work surface was ideal for clamping the Kreg Jig clamps to the headboard while fastening. All four sides of the Speed Cart table top have enough space for clamping.

During the same headboard build, the Speed Bench was used as a miter saw stand while cutting the lumber down to size. The surface of the workstation was deep enough to hold the large saw base without having any overhang.

Work Surface Markings

Convenient SAE/Metric measurements and a protractor are printed on the surface for easy reference while working. These lines are good for a quick measurement when a tape measure is not handy.  These lines are black and bold which makes them stand out and are easy to read, even in low-lit areas.

The angles from left to right read 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75°, 90°, 75°, 60°, 45°, 30°, and 15°. Additionally, the bottom of the work surface features a 40″ ruler divided into 1/4″ increments. We tested these measurements using our digital angle finder, a rafter square, and a tape measure and they proved to be accurate.

Ryobi LINK Accessory Compatible

The Ryobi Speed Bench features 2 LINK assembly rails and 1 LINK double organizer bin that securely attach to the workstation’s top. This setup effectively prevents small parts, fasteners, or bits from getting lost during work. However, it’s worth noting that the double organizer did not fit tightly on the rails, risking items falling or getting misplaced.

Final Thoughts

The Ryobi STM202 Speed Bench impressed us with its robust, durable design while remaining portable and easily storable. Its affordable price point makes it attractive to both homeowners and contractors seeking a reliable workstation. With its adaptability and practicality, it will soon become a popular choice for projects in a variety of settings.

You will see many of these on the job sites!

Noise

With the name “Air Cannon” most people will likely assume this fan is loud. The Ryobi RY40HF01 is part of their Whisper Series line and is extremely quiet. Ryobi has several tools in their Whisper Series line. These include; cordless blowers, lawnmowers, string trimmers, and fans. Ryobi continues to cut down the noise, while still delivering the power needed to get the job done.

We performed a decibel test with an app on an iPhone called “Decibel X”. We have used this app on other tool testing and the results on those tests were extremely close to what the MFG specs were. The phone was placed at the user’s ear height and 8′ away from the fan but in the fan’s wind path. The fan was set on the ground and the fan pivoted towards the user.

Decibels Recorded

      • 77.1 was the max decibels recorded on HIGH.
      • 65.5 was the max decibels recorded on MEDIUM
      • 44.8 was the max decibels recorded on LOW

Whether employed in a workshop or inside the household,  this fan operates very quietly, allowing for uninterrupted conversations or unexpected phone calls. Surprisingly quiet, it improves the workspace as a whole, creating an ideal environment for uninterrupted work.

CFMs Per Settings

The Ryobi RY40HF01 Air Cannon comes with four operational settings. There is a large speed switch on the right side of the fan. On this speed switch, there is 0-Off, 3-High, 2 – 2-Medium, and 1-Low. Here is a list of the CFMs per Ryobi on each setting.

    • High – 6,300 CFMs
    • Medium – 4,450 CFMs
    • Low – 2,850 CFMs

Ideal Usages

The Ryobi RY40HF01 Air Cannon fan proves invaluable in many different applications. Whether it is keeping the air flowing through the workshop, or expelling paint fumes or dust, this air cannon has got it covered. Outdoors, it transforms into a cooling beast, offering relief from sweltering temperatures. Having the air cannon handy for that backyard BBQ or weekend camping trip is a must. With the rugged wheels and portability, we feel that this fan would be delightful at the beach on a hot summer afternoon.

During renovations, the fan can efficiently clear demolition dust. The large volume of airflow can quickly displace particles ensuring a cleaner workspace.

We used it in the shop to provide ventilation and cooling and to assist in drying cedar clapboards that we pre-painted indoors due to the colder outside temperatures. We can also see the Air Cannon being useful when used to dry wet spaces or floors due to cleaning, or water leaks.

The versatility of the Ryobi RY40HF01 air cannon extends beyond just air movement, making it essential for comfort, safety, and efficiency in various environments and tasks.

Air Cannon | Run-Time

The Ryobi RY40HF01 has an impressive run-time. Ryobi says it will get 34 hours of continued run-time on the lowest setting using a 40v 12Ah battery. As you can see in the diagram above, times reduce roughly in half when going to a 6.0Ah and three-quarters when running with a 4.0Ah battery.

AC/DC Capable

One nice feature of the Air Cannon is that it is a “hybrid fan,” meaning it has AC/DC capability. If you need continuous operation you have the option to plug in an extension cord. [Cord not supplied] This plug is located inside the bottom of the battery compartment.

TBB Crew member Rob was so impressed with the Air Cannon that he is going to put it in his shop as a permanent fixture, permanently plugging it into line voltage.

Adjustment Knob | Pivoting The Fan

The Ryobi Air Cannon has one large-sized adjustment knob for fan pivoting,  located on the left side. To modify the fan head’s angle, loosen the adjustment knob. When loosened, this knob allows for 180° of pivot. To secure, select the desired position and tighten the knob.

Portability

The Air Cannon comes with 6″ rubberized wheels which assist with maneuverability and portability on the job site. These wheels required assembly after unboxing. One bolt and 3 washers per wheel and set up was complete.

We found that the Air Cannon rolls easily over grass, gravel, and concrete.  To assist in transportation there is a large, collapsible handle on the top of the unit, the handle folds down when not in use. This handle is robustly constructed with ABS plastic and metal pivot pins. The handle rotates off a stationary [black colored] crossbar that we found useful for securing cam straps to when transporting this fan in our work van.

Two-Handed Carry

On the opposite side of the fan, just above the battery location is an indent designed to assist as a “built-in” handle when lifting the fan with two hands.

Sturdy Construction

The Air Cannon is constructed mostly of metal components and some ABS plastic. Ryobi used metal where it counts; on the frame, axle, fan shroud and fan grill.  Its clear that some thought was put into the use of metal as it appears robust and designed to withstand transportation and falls, ensuring durability and longevity in your investment.

Room for Improvement

We’d like to highlight one potential improvement idea. The recessed carry handle on the battery side could benefit from being larger. We noted that a few of us found it too narrow for our hands when carrying the unit from a van or trailer.

Overall Thoughts

When it comes to the Ryobi 40v line of equipment, we feel that they continue to get it right.  Our crew has always been impressed with the outdoor power equipment, and this hybrid air cannon fan is no exception. With three speeds, the option for all-day run-time, and the ease of portability, your scorching job sites will soon be tolerable and might even have you reaching for that long-sleeved sun shirt. It is really quiet and will not interfere with your normal job site conversations or make you turn the volume up on the radio.

We examined the Ryobi 18V cordless vacuum, model PCL732, notable for its innovative design allowing attachment to a 5-gallon bucket as the collection canister.

When I review a cordless or corded vacuum, I’m looking to check off four boxes:

1. Does it have good suction? (CFM/Airflow, and water lift)
2. Does it have a comprehensive array of attachments?
3. Does it have a sturdy build quality?
4. Is it portable?

RYOBI Bucket Top Vacuum  | Overview

This new Ryobi cordless vacuum excels in handling both wet and dry cleanup tasks. It comes with a crevice nozzle but lacks a wider vacuuming head.

A notable feature is the convenient storage solution for all components, including the hose, on-board crevice tool, battery, and charger, fitting neatly inside the bucket. Noticeably missing was a 4″ or 6” floor sweep nozzle and a squeegee nozzle for water pick up.

While equipped with a blower port like many shop vacuums, its practical utility is questionable for most vacuum users.

The vacuum boasts a maximum airflow of 45 CFM. However, it’s important to note that the term “max” in marketing materials often suggests variable performance and may not be sustained throughout the battery charge. It’s rated to have 32 inches of water lift (IOW), a measure of static suction pressure at no net flow, indicating how many inches the vacuum will vertically lift 1 inch of water.

Weighing 4.25 lbs. and featuring a 4-foot by 1-1/4” diameter hose, this vacuum also includes a filter bag for dry vacuuming. The battery inserts on top of the unit alongside a rocker-style power switch. It has a decibel rating of 72.4 dB(A).

RYOBI Vacuum Specifications

  • 4′ x 1-1/4″ hose
  • Wet/dry capability
  • Maximum airflow of 45 CFM
  • 32 inches of water lift (IOW)
  • Sound level as low as 72.4 dB(A)
  • Weight: 4.25 lbs.
  • Blower port
  • Compatible with most 5-gallon buckets

Ryobi Vacuum | Run-time and Efficiency Testing

The vacuum was tested in a shop environment, primarily with sawdust and clean water. I will note that on two occasions I plugged the hose into the blower port and either blew dust or water all over the place. Ryobi should label the intake port better.

When paired with the 4.0 Ah battery, the vacuum can operate continuously for approximately 12 minutes.

I decided to test it’s water suction capability using clean water from a separate bucket and placing the hose directly into the water. Suction was great and I was able to suck up 3.62 gallons [bucket capacity] in 12 seconds [average time]

I repeatedly transferred the water back and forth until the vacuum lost suction, which occurred after 30 cycles. Impressively, it managed to remove a total of 108.60 gallons of water on a single 4.0 Ah battery charge. I was unable to test the vacuum with a wider squeegee sweeping nozzle.

For the sawdust and particulate pick up I used the crevice nozzle. The suction was decent, not great, and about what I expected from a $60 vacuum. I was unable to test the vac with a wider sweeping nozzle.

Ryobi Vacuum  | Suggested Improvements

While I love the innovative bucket top design, Ryobi could enhance it’s appeal to professionals and serious enthusiasts by improving durability, motor strength, airflow system.

I’d like to see some accessories offered such as a 4” sweeping and squeegee nozzle, and an efficiency filter capable of capturing particles down to 1 micron at 99% efficiency.

Lastly, offering a model that offers AC/DC functionality, with a 20-foot power cord would be amazing, especially when cleanup needs exceed the battery run-time.

I recognize that all the items I just described come with an associated increase in cost. While some may be hesitant to pay this premium, there are many who recognize and appreciate the value they bring.

Who knows, maybe HD will allow them to make a premium model?

Price

One of the most appealing aspects of this vacuum is its affordability, priced at $60 as a bare tool (PCL732B) and $119 for the kit, which includes the vacuum, a 4Ah battery, and a charger.

RYOBI 18V ONE+ Bucket Top Wet/Dry Vacuum
$60.00

Conclusion

The bucket top design is a commendable idea, at the end of the day consumers looking for a cordless wet/dry vacuum still want.

  • Good suction (CFM/Airflow, and water lift)
  • A comprehensive array of attachments
  • Sturdy build quality
  • Portability

Ryobi comes real close to achieving this, but falls a little short. Despite its shortcomings, this vacuum sells for $60, and represents a commendable option for consumers seeking low cost, convenience and functionality.

With slight improvements in the areas I described, Ryobi holds the promise to emerge as the preferred choice for those seeking a versatile bucket top vacuum solution. Let’s hope Home Depot provides the platform for Ryobi to elevate to a premium vacuum and establish itself as a “new standard” in wet/dry vacuuming.

Head-To-Head Testing Criteria

Our team meticulously evaluated these cordless SDS-Plus rotary hammers, across five categories and ranked them.

  1. Performance Test – Speed at drilling various size holes in concrete.
  2. Efficiency Test – Run-time test of recommended battery normalized for Watt-Hour capacity.
  3. Size and Weight – Size matters and weight can get cumbersome. We measured the dimensions and weight of each concrete drill as tested with batteries. [not factored in overall ranking]
  4. On-Board Dust Collection – we tested and ranked features.
  5. User Experience- Combination of features, ergonomics and subjective user evaluations.
Additionally we included price, and best value charts for your consideration.

Silica Dust

The Tool Box Buzz Team recognizes the significant dangers that exposure to silica dust can pose to workers. While we always strive to use any and all personal protective equipment, there are times when we may omit certain PPE during testing. We want to remind anyone that uses concrete cutting and drilling tools to use proper protective equipment to prevent silica dust exposure.

Performance Evaluation | Drilling Test

This test evaluated the speed in which the tools could drill 3-inch deep holes into concrete with 4 different bit sizes. The drilling substrate used was 3,500 psi concrete blocks, 12” x 24” x 4.5″ deep. These concrete blocks had cured for 6-months.

Performance Test Procedure

Drill Sizes Evaluated: ¼”, ⅜”, ½”, and 1″ SDS-Plus rotary drill bits.

  1. Five holes drilled to a depth of 3” using a depth rod and blue tape for accuracy.
  2. Each hole was timed, and an average recorded.
  3. All drills equipped with new Milwaukee SDS-Plus rotary drill bits.
  4. Operators instructed to maintain consistent pressure and let the drill do the work.
  5. Dust extractors were not utilized.
  6. Technique emphasized to ensure fair comparison.

Performance Test Winner – Milwaukee

Milwaukee dominated three out of the four speed tests, earning an impressive overall score of 5. DEWALT’S 60V FlexVolt secured second place with an overall score of 15, excelling particularly with the 1-inch bit test. Hilti and Ridgid claimed third place with an overall score of 18. Metabo followed with a score of 21. The Metabo was not a remarkable tool, but was a consistent “power-house performer.”

Individual Test Results | Top 3

Note on DEWALT FlexVolt 60V Rotary Hammer

The DEWALT Flexvolt was an extremely powerful and heavy tool allowing it to shine in the 1-inch drill bit test and subsequent chipping evaluation.

Efficiency Evaluation | Normalized Run-time

Although run-time becomes less critical with sufficient battery capacity, we acknowledge it’s importance in specific scenarios such as with commercial users, installing numerous drop anchors in a day. With so many tools, battery voltages and sizes, we normalized run-time and investigated the efficiency of the tools energy available. Obviously some battery packs contain much more potential energy so it’s important to try and compare them based on the “size of the fuel tank”.

Efficiency Testing Procedure

  1. Vacuums removed for this test.
  2. All tools equipped with fresh batteries.
  3. 1/2″ Milwaukee drill bits drilled to 3″ depth.
  4. Operators instructed to maintain consistent pressure and let the drill do the work.
  5. The total number of drilled holes were counted and scored.

Holes Drilled Per Watt-Hour – Winner Makita 18V

The Makita 18V drill claimed the top spot, surprising us all with it’s performance. This drill managed to complete 66.5 holes with a single 4 Ah battery with a 0.92 holes drilled per watt-hour.

Interestingly, the Makita 36-volt model, despite having twice the available watt-hours, only completed 82 holes, representing just a 23% increase in hole count which equated to only drilling 0.57 holes per watt-hour. This unique comparison between the two Makita drills highlights a design prioritization of efficiency vs power.

The Metabo 18 volt came in second place with 0.85 holes per watt-hour. Third place went to the DEWALT 20 volt with 0.82 holes per watt-hour.

Size and Weight – Not Used In Final Rankings

In the realm of SDS-Plus rotary hammers, size matters to some users. We measured the dimensions and weight of each drill, as tested (with Batteries / handle), and ranked them accordingly.

We felt the two most important factors for these drills were the weight and head length. Having a lightweight tool coupled with a compact size can be an important factor for some users. While we didn’t include this ranking in the final scoring we did account for the size and weight in our user experience rankings below. It’s interesting to see that most of the smaller / lighter tools didn’t perform as well as the heavier tools in the speed testing. Likely this is due to the size of the gear boxes, motors and housings.

In this category, the Kobalt drill boasted the shortest and lightest stature among all drills tested, clinching the top spot. Following closely in second place was the DEWALT 20V, which also showcased a compact form factor and lightweight design. The Ryobi drill secured third place in this ranking.

On-Board Dust Extractor Evaluation

On-board dust extractors are designed to be used as a system. Eight of these tools were sent with compatible on-board dust extractors to evaluate.

Dust Extractor Procedure

We tested the on-board dust extractors, ranking eight criteria:

  1. Capacity – We drilled ½” x 3” holes until we saw dust “ant-hills” form around the hole. At that point we consider the capacity of the dust extractor full.
  2. Visual inspection of capacity.
  3. Filter cleaning – Self cleaning or manual function
  4. Filter replacement – ease of removal.
  5. Depth of hole with attachment.
  6. Depth guide – ease of adjustment.
  7. Replaceable head.
  8. Weight.

On-Board Dust Extractor – Winner Hilti

The Hilti came in first place in the on-board dust extractor category. It was feature rich with its replaceable head, depth guide, and filter cleaning options. Despite clinching the top position, the team collectively noted that the dust canister could be improved by being translucent for better visibility, and the filter could be easier to detach from the canister.

In terms of “capacity” performance, the Hilti canister maintained dust extraction efficiency for 14 holes. Milwaukee drilled 10.5 holes, and Makita 40V managed 15 holes.  Surprisingly, the Metabo HPT drilled 21.5 holes, and the DEWALT 20V drilled 22 holes, but didn’t excel  in other feature comparisons.

User Experience – [Tie] Winner Hilti and Makita 40V

User experience (UX) encompasses the overall satisfaction and ease of use that a tool provides to its users. In this category, our team of Pro users provided subjective rankings for the user experience while handling these rotary hammers. This ranking was based on various factors experienced, including grip, balance, vibration, line of sight, ease of use, fatigue factor, and overall comfort.

The team identified four drills as top performers during testing. The Hilti and Makita were tied for first place, closely followed by a tie between the DEWALT 20V and Milwaukee 18V. All four of these tools exhibited commendable performance in our testing and were noted for their user experience.

Rotational Force | Bind Test – Not Ranked

When a drill binds, it has the potential to violently spin the tool around potentially injuring the user.
To assess the performance in binding situations, we conducted a subjective test by drilling a 1-inch diameter, 8-inch, deep hole in concrete and side load force.

3 Types of Safety Shut-Offs in Rotary Hammers

  1. Accelerometer – An electronic component integrated into the tool that detects sudden rotation and initiates an automatic shutdown.
  2. Mechanical – Utilizes a straightforward mechanical clutch mechanism whereby the tool continues to run, but the bit stops spinning when the clutch is engaged.
  3. Electronic Overload – An electronic overload function is activated either before the mechanical clutch or during specific binding scenarios. This electronic overload serves to safeguard the electronics, motor, and battery, while also acting as a safety feature in certain situations.

Rotational Force Findings

During our testing, all of these tools effectively shut off when the tool was bound up and the user had a firm grip on both the tool and the auxiliary handle.

Standout tools featured all three safety mechanisms, predominantly found in higher-end models such as those from Bosch, Hilti, Makita (40-volt) and Milwaukee. These tools successfully incorporated all three mechanisms that we were able to activate during field testing.

Chipping Test – Winner DEWALT 60V

Our chipping testing methodology was primarily subjective in nature. We employed our drill testing blocks to conduct the chipping tests.

TBB Crew users utilized the rotary hammers to break up the test blocks, after which they provided feedback via a form detailing their chipping experience.

The consensus from our testing suggests that there’s a “secret sauce” combination of impact energy and beats per minute (BPM) that yields optimal chipping power. This mix of factors seems to be instrumental in achieving productive chipping results.

The DEWALT 60V was the largest and heaviest tool in the group and with 4.5 FT-LBS of energy, it’s no surprise that it excelled at chipping, taking first place

The DEWALT Flexvolt was a “jack hammer disguised as a drill  ~ TBB Crew Wes Bartosik

The Makita 40V came in second. It has tons of power and minimal vibrations felt, due to its well throughout decoupling. The Milwaukee 18V came in third place. It delivers an incredible amount of energy on impact and was very controllable while cutting scribe lines.

SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer | Price – Not Included In Final Scoring

Most manufacturers offer these rotary hammers in kit form, bundling the tool with a battery optimized for performance while maintaining a manageable weight. Achieving the best user experience hinges on finding the right balance between weight, balance, and power to accomplish tasks efficiently.

For your reference, we have listed bare tool pricing below, although this wasn’t factored into our final scoring. As an illustration of the cost range, the Kobalt is available as a bare tool for $99.00, while the Makita 40-volt model is priced at $589.00. Please refer to the attached chart for further details.

Best Cordless 1-Inch SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer – Winner Milwaukee 18V

While impact energy undoubtedly influences a tool’s performance, it’s crucial to recognize that it’s not the sole determinant of effectiveness. Other factors, such as RPM and BPM, also play significant roles in achieving the desired outcome for the user. Harmonizing impact energy, RPM, and BPM is essential to optimize the tool’s overall efficiency and effectiveness.

Decisions should be based on considerations related to ergonomics, safety, and mechanical performance. Balancing these aspects ensures that the tool not only performs well but also prioritizes the safety and user experience of the user.

It’s noteworthy that when ranking our categories, we assigned double weight to performance scores, considering it the most valuable category.

Milwaukee claimed the top spot in performance, secured second place in dust extraction, and ranked third in both user experience (UX) and chipping. Its overall performance stood out as the clear winner.

Second Place honors go to the Makita 40V.  This Makita excelled in UX, chipping and dust extraction. The Makita 40V was a favorite among the crew, tying with Hilti for the top spot in UX.

Hilti rounded out the podium in 3rd place.  The Hili was also heavily sought after by the crew and ranking first in the UX category, boasting the best dust extraction, and coming in eighth in performance testing and fourth in chipping.

Tied for fourth place was Metabo and DEWALT 60V. Metabo stood out with it’s second place in efficiency and scored well in both user experience and chipping. The DEWALT 60V was impressive in the chipping tests and performance.

Best Value 1″  SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer – Winner Ridgid

This category winner often strikes a chord with users as it showcases an SDS-Plus drill that performs admirably while being more budget-friendly. In many respects, it’s a category of significant importance, sometimes overshadowing the top-ranked contender, crowned king of our 1″ SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer Head-to-Head Test.

The Ridgid 18V, priced at $269 as a bare tool, claimed victory in this category. Despite landing in seventh place overall, it delivered commendable performance, securing a solid fifth place rank in our performance testing. We often refer to Ridgid as the “hidden gem” of the tool industry.

Ryobi Announces 18V ONE+ 4Ah Lithium High Performance Edge Battery Pack (PBP1104)

Tabless 21700 lithium cells are entering the market in many Brands and Ryobi jumped into the action today. These new battery packs offer more power, more run-time, cooler operation, and a longer lifetime. The following was released by Ryobi today:

  • RYOBI – Leading The Cordless Revolution: RYOBI continues to drive innovation and advancements in lithium battery technology with the next evolution of its 18V ONE+ battery.
  • Tabless Cell Advantage: Utilizing upgraded tabless 21700 lithium cells, this all-new ONE+ battery provides more power and longer runtime while running cooler and living longer than other ONE+ batteries in a more compact size. With a re-designed cell structure, tabless cell technology enhances energy transfer efficiency, leading to increased power output and cooler operation in demanding scenarios. This results in extended runtime and an overall longer lifespan for the battery pack. These HIGH PERFORMANCE EDGE batteries will elevate the performance of over 300 cordless products in the RYOBI 18V ONE+ System.
  • 18V ONE+ Compatibility: This all-new battery is forward and backward compatible with all RYOBI 18V ONE+ tools, giving users the Power To Do EVEN More.

Initial Thoughts

This is a really exciting development especially for Ryobi. These new cells are a much needed upgrade to the cordless tool industry. The biggest benefit in our opinion is the ability to operate at lower temperatures which results in much longer battery life and the ability to provide much higher amp draws for high demand applications. According to Ryobi this batteries will hit the market in the Summer of 2024 and we’ll be getting some samples in the Spring of 2024. This new technology has already appeared in a few brands and it’s clear this is the new standard for cordless tools.

This year’s TBB’s 2023 Holiday Gift Guide will help you pick out the perfect gift(s) for that hard-to-buy-for tradesperson in your life. Especially if you’re shopping for someone who just wants tools but already seems to have too many. Or that special person talks about tools and hardware even when they know you don’t have a clue what they are talking about. Yeah… we’re here to help!  Whether you need that last small gift or are looking to start off with a big bang, we have you covered. We go through the heartache, pain, and suffering of testing out some of the industry’s uniquest (yep, that’s a real word), most practical, and just plain coolest tools and job site gadgets to create a full-spectrum holiday gift guide.

To help you out, regardless of your budget, we broke down the tools by price categories which are:

  • $30 and under:  The Simple gift
  • $30-75:  The Perfect gift
  • $75-200:  The Surefire gift
  • Over $200:  Santa’s REALLY nice list!

And all of the tools in our 2023 Holiday Gift Guide are ones that are in our job site kits or our Pros’ workshops. So hang some lights and then get ready to hang out with us for a bit.

$30 and under Gifts | The Simple gift

  • DEWALT Elite Ceramic-Coated Abrasives

If you are trying to think of something small to finish off your list or throw in a stocking these DEWALT abrasive discs are awesome. They come in a variety of sizes to fit a wide range of angle grinders. The ceramic abrasive quality is second to none. It may not seem exciting but having discs on hand that don’t burn out in a hurry is awesome when you’re in the middle of metal fabrication of any kind. It’s a fun way to let someone try a new brand or style of something they may already buy on a regular basis.

Purchase at DEWALT for $8-20

  • Kobalt 24 & 48 in. Levels

We’re sure you builder has calibrated eyeballs (just like us) and doesn’t always need a level. But when they do… have them reach for one of these Kobalt levels. The 24″ level is great for most common indoor tasks like hanging pictures or shelves. And the 48″ level is great for more intense tasks like leveling framing or as a straight edge for plywood or drywall sheets. The bubbles on these Kobalt levels are easy to see, they are durable, and best of all the price is reasonable.

Purchase at Lowes for $18-25

  • Milwaukee Tape Measure 2-Pack Set

We will probably never have a holiday gift guide without a tape measure. This year it’s the Milwaukee tape measures that caught our eye. They are the most essential tool at hand and one that typically wears out from such frequent use. These tape measures are easy to read, have a solidly designed locking lever, and are rugged as hell. They have great extension rigidity until they hit their fold point. They are sure to last until you decide to replace them next holiday season (and beyond). You cant go wrong with a Milwaukee tape measure.

  • Gerber Zilch Knife

If you’ve relied on any of our previous holiday gift guides you’ll know that we love a good pocket knife. Chances are your tool lover may as well. Look for further than the Gerber Zilch. This is a sharp-as-hell out of the box, straightforward folding knife. There are multiple color schemes to choose from (we loved the tactical coyote brown and black knife). Its lightweight and sports a great belt clip. The locking mechanism is a standard inside handle locking tab design and it works great.

  • Elgin Firebolt Flashlight

The Elgin Firebolt is a well-rounded flashlight in every way. First, it features a tough yet lightweight metal case. And the case is hex shaped to prevent it from rolling off work surfaces. It also has a magnetic integrated into the side so you can stick it on a close metal surface to work hands free. Second, its satisfyingly bright (~100 lumens) for a single LED light. And third, the battery life (2x AAA batteries) is surprisingly efficient. And the IP66 rating means it’s actually quite weatherproof. Shoot, get a couple to leave in the shop or in some vehicles and you’ll be reaping the rewards of a solid holiday purchase for a long time to come.

  • Ryobi USB Rechargeable Inflator

Having an inflator in your vehicle can be a literal lifesaver. The Ryobi USB-battery digital readout inflator works wonderfully. It’s the most compact battery powered inflator we’ve used and includes an integrated inflator needle if you need to fill up a ball. The USB battery is recharged using a Type C USB cord which is pretty universal these days. Getting the tire pressure low warning on a cold winter morning is no fun but skipping a quick trip to the gas station or firing up your air compressor saves time and frustration.

  • Milwaukee Hex Key Set

There are few things more annoying than having a missing hex key when you are in the middle of a task involving small bolts or fasteners. This Milwaukee hex key set eliminates that hassle by conveniently mounting common hex key sizes on a flip out style handle. The handle, unlike some cheaper versions, is sturdy and won’t crack under the torque applied from breaking free stuck fasteners. They are compact and easy to store too with hardened metal that won’t strip easily. These make a great small gift or stocking stuffer for sure!

One of our shop Pros recently needed some quick-adjusting clamps with a dovetail-compatible foot for a table saw rail and CNC table hold-downs. He tested out these Microjig Dovetail Ratchet Clamps and loved them. The foot securely slides along a T-Track or dovetail groove. The foot firmly ratchets into place and includes a spring mechanism to allow it to maintain its setting despite gravity’s best efforts. • Bosch Colt 1-HP Palm Router

Palm or trim routers are very useful tools to ensure smooth laminates or layer-ed glue-up tasks. As far as routers go, they are lightweight and portable. The Bosch Colt 1-HP palm router is impressively powerful and smooth and stands out in this compact router class. It is great for small shops where power and outlets are plentiful. It is also an excellent choice for any CNC router tools and investments which is a task we tested heavily while trying out the Bosch Colt. The variable speed dial is responsive and stays in place despite constant vibrations which is an important feature. The collet was easy to access, and the quick release collar was well designed and easy to adjust. All in all, this is a great trim router option with all the core features we look for in a corded option.

  • Elgin Rampage Headphones

We’ve had Elgin USA hearing protection on our shops for years and are as impressed with them today as we were when we first put them on. And we appreciate a variety of designs to match a variety of tasks. So, while we love Elgin’s REBEL earbuds for welding and grinding, the RAMPAGE headphones are awesome for tasks like cutting and nailing. They fit snugly over your ears without becoming uncomfortable after hours of use. They offer a respectable 25 dB noise rating (OSHA compliant!) and connect to a phone via Bluetooth. Best of all though the button design was designed in an easy-to-operate-even-with-work gloves way. Use it to adjust volume or make calls with the integrated mic. These Husky floor mats fit like a glove and are built to stand up to the rigors of a work crew. But that doesn’t mean that they are only for work trucks. They look so good that they are an instant upgrade to any vehicle – cars, vans included. The only vehicle we wouldn’t put them on is a motorcycle. RYOBI now has over 280 18-volt tools in their One+ System. In this review, we are taking a look at the second-generation 18V Cordless Oscillating Multi-Tool (PBLMT51B). As with most of the Ryobi 18V One+ System, the tool is sold without a battery and can be used with any of the 18V One+ batteries that Ryobi sells. The Ryobi line of cordless tools are a great option for homeowners, DIY’ers, and anyone looking for an affordable line of tools for light to moderate use.

Oscillating multi-tools are very versatile cutting tools with many uses including cutting off nails, screws, and small bolts, cutting door jambs for flooring installation, cutting holes in drywall, removing grout between tiles, light demolition, and much more

Gen 2 OMT Features | Specifications

  • OPM – 0-20,000
  • Oscillating Angle – 3.8°
  • Variable Speed Dial
  • Converts to detail sander
  • Cuts 80% faster and 2.5x more cuts than Gen 1
  • 86% lower vibration than Gen 1
  • LED Light

Gen 2 OMT Components

The RYOBI PBLMT51 comes with the following items.

  • 18v Brushless OMT
  • Plunge Cut Blade
  • Flush Cut Blade
  • Sanding Pad
  • Sandpaper for pad: 60 grit, 80 grit, 120 grit

RYOBI 18v Oscillating Multi-Tool | On the Job

We used the RYOBI Oscillating Multi-Tool on a custom fireplace build. Some of the applications involved cutting back old baseboards to install new solid trim up to it. Additionally, we used the OMT to cut back some shiplap that was installed a little too “proud” so we could fit an electric insert fireplace.

Variable Speed

RYOBI, like the majority of OMTs on the market, adjusts the speed of oscillation with a rotary dial. The dial is situated on the tool’s top and is easily visible while operating the tool in case you need to adjust during cutting.

Love the speed dial placement, it’s easy to locate and adjust on the fly while cutting.

Variable speed is an important option on oscillating multi-tools due to the range in cutting applications these tools are used for. Depending on the type of blade and the material being cut, the speed of the blade can have a significant impact on the quality of the cut and how well the material cuts. So having this option available is a great feature.

When the variable speed dial is fully clockwise to the “1” position, the tool is in the LOW position. When you spin the dial, you can feel it click into the detent. Turn the dial counterclockwise to select faster speeds. At 0 – 20,000 OPM, the variable speed dial gives you complete flexibility over a wide range of applications.

Blade Change

RYOBI OMT features a tool-free blade change for quick and easy accessory changes.  The head of the multi-tool has a release lever that pulls back, when it pulls back the retainer pin slides out. Once the new blade or other accessory is installed, slide the pin back in and reset the lever.  While we understand the need for the retaining pin to be removable, we feel that it is just another small part of a tool that could perhaps get misplaced or lost if accidentally dropped while changing out blades/accessories. More expensive OMT’s have done away with this type of blade lock for this very reason.

Trigger VS On-Off Switch

One feature I like on the RYOBI OMT is the trigger. In my opinion, the trigger is better than an on-off switch. The trigger allows the ability to “feather in” or “soft start” the OMT versus the on-off switch. Once I get my cut lined up where I want/need it to be, I can go full throttle and get the cut made.

LED Light

When working in dimly lit areas, the LED work light is handy to illuminate your workspace. The LED light on the OMT is located at the front of the tool just above the blade and allows for good lighting coverage.

Final Thoughts

The ergonomic design of the handle allows the OMT to be well-balanced in the hand while cutting!

With over 280 products, the RYOBI 18v One+ line of tools provides the versatility to get the job done. Even better is the availability of these tools at the local Home Depot. No waiting or shipping is required. Because of their extensive lineup and also the ability to get what you need, when you need it, and at an extremely reasonable price is what makes this RYOBI 18v Cordless Oscillating Multi-Tool highly recommended!

With the evolution of outdoor power equipment and lithium-ion battery technology, one-gallon pump sprayers are getting pushed aside. Manual sprayers are not conducive to productivity. They often do not hold enough product to get the large jobs done and who wants to manually pump these days? Avoiding hand pumping is probably the most beneficial feature of a cordless backpack sprayer.

Get More Done in Less Time – No Need to Stop and Pump Up The Sprayer – Battery Powered Time Saver!

RYOBI continues to impress the Tool Box Buzz crew with its outdoor power equipment [OPE] lineup. From their 18v products, 40v line of OPE, and recently the 80v Zero-Turn Mower we just reviewed.

Out of the Box | Assembly

There were some assembly steps necessary when the RYOBI backpack sprayer was delivered. The spray wand needed to be put together and the 2.0Ah battery needed to be charged. The trigger handle, which was already connected to the hose, needed to be connected to the spray wand. You are now prepared to begin working after completing these two stages.

Backpack Sprayer Tank |Features

Gravity Fed Tank Design

The gravity-fed tank’s design eliminates the problem of wasted fluid. On the right and left sides, fluid is pulled from the lowest position.

Fluid Level Indicators

There are two fluid level indicator scales on the tank. On the left side, there is a Gallon scale from 1-4.

The backpack sprayer also has a metric scale on the right side from 5, 10, and 15L markings. We felt that maybe highlighting the number would be easier on the eyes of the user and weren’t sure where exactly the line indicates the level.

Labor Free Benefits

As we mentioned before, one of the major benefits of cordless sprayers is the ability to avoid any manual hand-pumping.  Having to manually pump to build up the pressure to spray is time consuming, especially if you have a large amount of area to cover.

We find delight in preventing user fatigue while maintaining a good performance throughout your spraying job.

Speed Control Knob

On the lower left side of the cordless backpack sprayer, there is a speed control knob. You may adjust the speed for particular applications with the variable speed knob, which has a range of OFF to maximum PSI. Maximum speed enables 90 PSI of pressure, which quickly releases the substance.

Auto Lock Trigger

The RYOBI RY40301 has a yellow trigger lock switch located on the trigger handle allowing for a constant stream if desired. To activate what we would call “cruise control” pull the trigger lever and flip the yellow switch

To activate what we would call “cruise control” press the trigger lever and flip the yellow switch back. This will lock in the lever. Flip the lever back forward and it releases the lever and you are back to controlling the flow.

Comfort Backpack Straps

There is a comfortable backpack design with padded and adjustable shoulder straps allowing you to spray around the yard comfortably. The straps have multiple points that you can adjust to achieve the most comfortable position for the user.

There is a middle chest buckle preventing the straps from falling off your shoulders.

Run-Time

RYOBI claims that you can spray 200 gallons per charge on a 2.0Ah battery. During our testing and evaluation, we flowed 50+ gallons of pesticide and herbicide. We also flowed roughly 20+ gallons of water through the tank just cleaning it out in between uses. We did not notice any decrease in power throughout our spraying and the indicator light on the battery was at 2 bars.

Think about the amount of pumping required for 200 one-gallon containers. Additionally, the time saved by using a 4-gallon tank rather than stopping to fill a 1-gallon container.

Overall Impressions

Whether you are a simple DIY homeowner or a professional landscaper, the RYOBI RY40301 Cordless Backpack Sprayer is one of those pieces of equipment that just makes sense to have. If you are on the RYOBI 40v platform then it is definitely worth the purchase. Sold in a kit for $219.00.

As general contractors, we receive requests for a wide variety of tasks. This RYOBI 40v 4-gallon cordless backpack sprayer will allow you to efficiently flow products, such as insecticides on the foundations of houses or herbicides to kill undesired vegetation.

With the RYOBI 40V 4 Gal. Cordless Backpack Sprayer, you can complete the task at hand without ever having to pump anything.

The Ryobi 40V Cordless Backpack Sprayer is a Great Addition To Anyone’s Yard Care Tool Collection
