Werner AP-2030L on the Job Site

During a large renovation, we utilized these linking work platforms when installing our window trim. Having the ability to safely stand and move while working was key to our success. Not having to relocate a small step ladder multiple times allowed us to install the window trims faster.

Each platform is almost 4′ long. Combining them together and the ability to safely work to the right and left we were able to cover about 10′-12′ at once without moving the platform.

The 14″ wide platform makes walking and turning around a non fall issue. Doubling your work length without having to move the platform is a really nice feature.

Set Up | Quick Link Technology

With Werner’s quick link technology, no tools are required to set up. You can safely link two or more platforms together. The work platform is fast to set up with one-handed lock and height adjustments.

Connecting

To connect the platforms together you must first slide out the connecting plate. Once pulled out all the way, you can connect the second platform

The second platform links into the first by sitting on the connection plate.

Disconnecting

When you are ready to disconnect, you have to press the yellow levers on both sides and lift up. This will release the locking mechanism and you are disconnected.

Adjusting the Height

Adjusting the height is simple once the work platform has been safely opened. The platform step has a lever that you push to raise the legs  bottoms to the appropriate height. The work platform is adjustable between entirely closed (20′′) and fully extended (30′′). The same is true for locking them up; all you have to do is push a button and slide the legs upwards. The work platform is also very well stabilized by the large feet. The best part is this is all a one-handed operation.

Versatility

The Werner AP-2030L platform is extremely versatile. There are several options in which you can deploy this work platform.

Due to the variable height adjustment on the legs, you can work on uneven ground without a stability issue. Working in areas with steps is no longer a safety hazard. Pairing multiple platforms allow for longer work areas and less moving of the platforms.

When folded up, the platform is extremely compact, measuring just over 4″.

Lightweight | Aluminum

Five-Position Adjustment

The Werner LEANSAFE X5 Ladder can morph into five different positions, although not all of these are as useful as other.  I ordered the positions by a combination of how frequently I used them and how useful I thought they were. But keep in mind that this will change for each user based on the type of jobs they are tasked with. The five positions, explained are:

• Step Ladder – Both legs remain the same height of 6 ft and are angled outward using the hinged locking bars between them. This was my most basic (and most frequent) use for the ladder.
• Leaning Ladder – In this position, both sets of ladder legs remain together, and the ladder is leaned against the work surface. The uniquely designed top tray is awesome on this position because it is shaped to securely lean against studs and corners (as well as flat walls)
• Extension Ladder – The orange legs are rotated to 180-degrees upward from the yellow legs. They should also be fully extended to give the maximum reach of 14 ft.
• Stair Ladder – This might have been my favorite use for the Werner LEANSAFE X5 Ladder. RHere the Yellow legs are spread apart from the orange legs and the orange legs are shortened to allow them to be placed a few stairs up from the base of the yellow stairs. It was a secure position that allows for safe work on stairways and stairwells
• Twin Ladder – This was my most infrequently used option with the LEANSAFE X5. It is really just 2 people using the step ladder at the same time. Since both sides are capable of supporting weight, you can “buddy share” the ladder with another user at the same time.

Changing between the different modes was extremely easy. It required very little hand strength and only moderate overhead strength to initially support/lift the orange set of legs into the extension position. The vast majority of users will have zero problems switching between positions.

Key Functional Features

The design of the dual-sided adjustment levers is well thought out. It easily allows the operator to lock or unlock the ladder leg hinge point with a single hand. This frees up your other hand to adjust the second set of legs or lock them out using the locking extension bars. If you struggle to lift the orange legs when switching to extension mode, try laying the Werner LEANSAFE X5 Ladder on its side, rotating the orange legs into a fully extended, 180-degree position, and then lifting the ladder upright.

I was also a huge fan of the top tray design. It has 3 standout features; a strong magnetic tray, non-marring contact surfaces, and a well-designed center hole that securely held my cordless tools. These three features combined to keep my tools and fasteners securely where I wanted and needed them to be. Few things are more annoying that knocking screws off the ladder top or dropping an expensive cordless tool from any height. The inconvenience is rivaled only by using a ladder for touch ups only to find that the ladder contact points have marred up the wall underneath the freshly touched up sections. It’s infuriating!

Safety Design Features

The Werner LEANSAFE X5 Ladder is also an extremely safe ladder. And any of our regular readers know our total rejection of unsafe working conditions. Again, the X5 showcases these standout features to make it an extremely safe ladder. First, the LEANSAFE X5, offers non-electrical conduction side guards to prevent unintentional electricity transference if the sides of the ladder touch live wires. It also incorporates wide, non-slip treads to make sure that the operators footing is secure no matter what the work conditions may be.

Lastly, the LEANSAFE X5 includes a recessed tool-holding center-hole on the top work tray. While this may not initially seem like a standout safety feature, falling tools, even if “only” from 8-10 ft, can easily cause serious injury. Especially if they are comparatively heavy and/or have a sharp blade! The X5’s tool hole offers a secure place to put down tools limiting (not preventing) you accidently knocking them off the top of the ladder. It’s great.

Final Thoughts | Werner LEANSAFE X5 Ladder

The Werner LEANSAFE X5 Ladder is a great ladder. And at $200 the price felt very reasonable for what you were getting. Does it cost more than your average step ladder? Yes, but as we discussed, it is much more than that. And the overall design quality and attention to detail compare extremely well to competitor multi-position ladders. Werner has a great reputation for a reason and the Werner LEANSAFE X5 Ladder will do nothing but reinforce that reputation!

Ladder Work Top

The top of the ladder is designed to safely lean against walls, poles, corners, wall studs, and holds tools nicely. We used the 2×4 cut-out on the ladder top to secure the ladder onto a stud wall, resulting in a stable leaning ladder-to-wall connection.  There are pads on the ladder top that also protect what you are leaning against, and convenient trays, hooks, cups, and holes on the top of the step ladder allow for tool and accessory storage.

Conclusion

This ladder is beefy and beefy usually translates into weight, as this ladder is NOT light. Its weight is due to its dual-sided ladder and aluminum construction is very versatile and easy to use. It can be used as a step ladder, team ladder, and extension ladder.

This ladder can be adjusted to be used on stairs and the extension ladder can be adjusted for uneven terrain.  When you have a versatile tool such as the Multi-Max Pro, you need to have at least one, better to have two of them on hand!

During a 2 family multi-family flip, we used the Werner Work Platform to install crown molding in the kitchen and hallway areas. Having the ability to safely stand and move while working was key to our success. Setting Up and Breaking Down the Werner Platform

To open the legs is very simple. There are no latches or pins, just 2 yellow locks that you pinch together and swing open the ladder. Once fully opened, the locks engage preventing the legs from inadvertently closing on you. When folding the platform, simply pinch the same yellow tabs and the legs swing in and  lock closed, preventing them from opening during transportation.

Adjusting the Step Height

Once you have securely opened the work platform adjusting the height is a breeze. There is a lever you push in on the platform step that extends the bottom of the legs out to the desired height. The work platform can adjust from 20″ fully closed to 30″ at max extension. The same goes for closing them up, all you do is press the button and slide the legs up and they lock in place. The wide feet also provide excellent stabilization for the work platform.

Our initial thought was the handle could result in a twisted ankle. Since it is right smack in the middle of the work platform. We were surprised this was not an issue at all. Having the handle in the middle allows you to carry the platform easily to and from the work area. The work platform folds up nicely and has a very small footprint for your van, truck, or trailer.

Additional Storage Solution

While these job boxes are great for the job site, I needed help with my tool trailer which is busting at the seams.  I wanted more storage in my driveway where I store my work trailer. I think of it as an extension of my shed but closer to the street.

I needed additional tool storage to hold items that we don’t use often like a concrete breaker, powder actuated nailer, SDS drills, and job site lighting. While these items are important to our remodeling operations, we don’t use them often and it makes no sense to take up valuable trailer shelf space with them.

I chose a gray-colored box to match my trailer color and also to blend in and not stick out for the neighbors.

Adjusting the Werner Multi Position Ladder

To adjust this ladder you release or engage the newly designed shatterproof aluminum j-locks. We found them easy to use, especially with the oversized impact-resistant push knobs. Day to Day Use

I found that there were three main features to the Werner Multi Position Ladder that improved my workflow and helped me with the type of work I do day-to-day.

Double-Sided Ladder

First, when set in the Double-Sided Twin Step Ladder, I found myself moving the ladder around far less than I did with a traditional step ladder. Because I am able to safely climb both sides of the ladder, I can effectively reach twice the area without moving the ladder. This undoubtedly helps when installing crown molding, repairing siding, or fastening longboards above your head. In the twin step ladder position, the ladder has a maximum working height of 13 feet and 2 inches.

Extension Ladder

Second, the Extension Ladder feature allows me to reach a maximum height of 22 feet, which is more than enough to reach most second story roofs. It is incredibly easy to adjust the height of the extension ladder with the J-locks. No longer do you need to pull a frayed rope to extend your ladder. The extremely durable aluminum J-locks can be effortlessly disengaged to extend the ladder and then re-engaged to lock the ladder in the desired position.

Self  Supporting Scaffold Base

Finally, the 2 Self-supported Scaffolding Bases are an added bonus for such a compact and light-weight ladder. Often, staging is needed to replace a window or siding or to level or insulate a ceiling. The fact that I can easily and safely set up staging with a maximum reach height of 8 feet 7 inches is a huge bonus for me.

All of these applications are possible with 1 ladder.
