 TBB’s 2022 Holiday Gift Guide

TBB’s 2022 Holiday Gift Guide will help you pick out the perfect gift(s) for that hard-to-buy-for tradesperson in your life. Especially if you’re shopping for someone who just wants tools but already seems to have too many. Or that special person talks about tools and hardware even when they know you don’t have a clue what they are talking about. Yeah… we’re here to help!  Whether you need that last small gift or are looking to start off with a big bang, we have you covered. We go through the heartache, pain, and suffering of testing out some of the industry’s uniquest (yep, that’s a real word), most practical, and just plain coolest tools and job site gadgets to create a full-spectrum holiday gift guide.

To help you out, regardless of your budget, we broke down the tools by price categories which are:

  • $50 and under:  The simple and/or “add on” gift
  • $50-100:  The standard gift category
  • $100-200:  The solid winner gift
  • Over $200:  Santa’s REALLY nice list!

And all of the tools in our 2022 Holiday Gift Guide are ones that are in our job site kits or our Pros’ workshops. So hang some lights and then get ready to hang out with us for a bit.

$50 and under Gifts | The simple and/or “add on” gift

  • Craftsman Magnetic Cup Holder

If your Tool lover spends [too much] time in their workshop, and especially if they have a beverage or two while there, then this  is the perfect gift. Just sneak out there and look at any steel-topped surface like a table saw or jointer. See any rust rings? Well this inexpensive gift will eliminate those and give your person a place to put their drink after they work up a sweat and need to take a break. It’s magnetic and can also be mounted with screws, which we love.

  • Microjig GRR-RIP  Push Block & Fit Finder

It’s always fun to get a new tool but it’s equally important to use them safely. If you want your Tool Lover to keep all their fingers intact then you should check out the Microjig GRR-RIP Push Block. It has “smart hooks” that fold up on a flat surface or stay down to catch the back edge of a piece of wood being pushed through the table saw or jointer. It has a long surface area and great grip to make it super easy to keep a solid hold on your workpiece as you push it through the blade. The Fit Finder is an ingenious tool for finding the half thickness measure of a piece of wood or metal material. You slide the “P2” piece to the height of the material and the “P3” piece automatically adjusts to the halfway mark. It’s awesome for making easy lap joints on a table saw or even finding the center of a pipe or round lathe blank.

  • Spyder Shop Stool

Standing for long periods of time doesn’t always feel great. Especially on a concrete or hard packed floor. In work boots. So give your builder a sweet stool to take a break on. The Spyder stool is just the right height for a standard workbench, shop countertop, or draftsman’s table. The flared-out legs make it very stable and the boot bars give you a nice place to rest your feet while sitting.

  • Kreg 1/4 in Shank Router Flush-Trim Bit

We’ve used flush trim router bits A LOT in or work shops over the years. But when Kreg let us test out their new flush trim bits that feature top AND bottom mounted guide bearings we were immediately excited. These allow you to trim 1 1/8 in. thick material. The 1/4 in. shank paired great with the Ridgid Trim router featured below but Kreg also makes these in a 1/2 in. shank version. Like any decent router bit they sport a carbide edge and work great for template cutting. If your tool lover uses a handheld or table-mounted router then these are a must have.

  • Spyder Mach Blue Drill Bits

Drill bits are always a great gift because they sometimes break or get lost or just plain get dull. These Spyder bits look as good as they perform. The Blue finish also makes it easy to tell them apart from older bits that aren’t part of the set. The hex shank means they work with standard impact drivers as well as drill bits. The clear front case also makes it easy to keep track of missing drill bits before you store them away. They’ll love them!

  • DEWALT Oscillating Multi-Tool Blade Set

We use our Oscillating Multi Tool (OMT) all the time, whether cutting trim or leveling off protruding nail heads. It has a good variety of blade shapes for a range of common materials. The case is handy and keeps the blades securely in place. And at $35 it’s a great value for what you’re getting from DEWALT!

Whether cleaning up a mortice and tenon joint or creating a just-right hinge recess, chisels are incredibly handy hand tools. This 4 Piece chisel set from Crescent holds their edge well and gives you the 4 basic sizes you need to tackle most any job. • Apex 11-Piece Pass Through Wrench Set

You might be thinking, my tool person already has wrenches. Too many wrenches for me to keep track of. But do they have a through wrench? A through wrench is built for ratcheting down nuts on long bolts or threaded rod. This Apex through wrench is even better because the through socket port is on the backend of an adjustable wrench. You get 2 tools in one here which makes it great to throw in your bag or truck and use on a number of jobs or tasks. Plus, the black-edition finish just looks sexy.

It allows you to use all-purpose cleaner (we used Mr. Clean) and a gentle abrasive pad to easily (and safely!) clean circular saw blades up to 12 in. as well as both 1/4 and 1/2 in. router bits. This is especially helpful if you’ve been working with soft woods that may have sap or pitch in the lumber and can heat up and stick to the blade when cutting. • Elgin Rumble (and Rebel) Earbuds

You know we prioritize safety at Tool Box Buzz. Power tools pose a long-term risk to hearing. So grab a pair of Elgin OSHA-compliant, NRR 27 decibel rated Rumble ear buds. We love them because they combine great hearing protection with clear audio quality. The earbud design with silicone ear tips and over ear hooks also means they stay securely in place even when running vibrating tools or wielding hand tools. Ear buds also offer the added advantage of working great with eye protection or headgear, such as grinding shields or welding helmets. The battery life is great on these Elgin earbuds, and they are IP67 rated meaning they are dust and sweat proof, essential jobsite characteristics. Elgin also sent us a pair of the Rebel Earbuds (which have no neck wire) and with an even more impressive NRR rating of 25 decibels, they are also great. Plus, the impact-resistant case even has a built in LED flashlight. At $129 they are a better fit in the next price category though.

It charges them one at a time, in series, so when you head out to your shop later on, you’ll have 6 charged Ryobi 18V batteries waiting for you. What’s more dangerous than a sharp knife?  That’s simple, it’s a dull knife!

Dull knives are dangerous because a dull blade requires more force to cut and can result in blade slipping off and missing the cut. A sharp blade is predictable.

Work Sharp Knife And Tool Sharpener

We’ve been using the Work Sharp knife and tool sharpening system for almost 10-years to keep our tools sharp.  Being able to look-back that long allows us to better evaluate and help you make better purchase decisions.  [Check out our Work Sharp Tool Sharpening System – 10-year lookback[

Work Sharp is a 4th generation, family-owned company based in Ashland Oregon. They also make the Drill Doctor – a drill bit sharpening tool.

Over the last 10 years, the Work Sharp system allows me to sharpen any profile edge; straight or recurve. It works by using a flexible abrasive belt and precision sharpening guides.

It’s neither difficult nor time-consuming, to use the Work Sharp knife and tool sharpening system to sharpen a knife.  Once you learn the technique it requires very little effort to accurately and precisely sharpen knives and tools.

The sharpening system allows me to avoid sending tools out for sharpening.  A couple of years of using a sharpening service will cost more than investing in this tool.

Work Sharp Knife And Tool Sharpener

Work Sharp Knife And Tool Sharpener

What I like about this tool, besides the fact that it paid for itself in the first year, is that I can be used  on multiple edged tools, such as:

  • Knives, Serrated, curved and straight
  • Scissors
  • Lawnmower blades
  • Shears
  • Hedge Trimmers
  • Axes, Mauls, shovels
  • Other edged tools

Work Sharp Knife And Tool Sharpener

Two Work Sharp Tools Available

Work Sharp offers two versions of this tool, and I’ve used both. The original KTS sharpening system and the Ken Onion version. There are three key differences, between the two, that you need to know are:

Work Sharp Knife And Tool Sharpener

Angle Guides

The Ken Onion version used 3/4″ x 12″ abrasive belts and has adjustable angle guides from 15°-30° (in 1° increment) The original KTS version has 2 guides that allow angles from 20°, 25°, and 65°scissor guide.

Motor

The Ken Onion Version has a variable-speed trigger that allows you to increase the speed for faster sharpening or decrease it for a more precise approach. The variable speed is managed through the trigger, the more you pull the faster it goes.

The Ken Onion version also has a heavy-duty motor that weighs twice as much as the original KTS version. This additional weight comes from the larger variable speed motor, larger overall size, and cast metal components.

The original KTS can be run on Intermittent or Full power, non-variable speed.

Work Sharp Knife And Tool Sharpener

Abrasive Belts

Both tools use Norton Norax Belts. The KTS comes with 5 total but only 3 different grit options, the Ken Onion comes with 5 different belts in different grits, only one of each.

The five belts offer you a wide range of grits to perform tasks as coarse as grinding and as fine as polishing an edge.

P120 Grit Belt

The P120 is a coarse belt that can be used for grinding or for fast stock removal from knives. This is a quality coated 3/4″ x 12″ fabric belt.

Work Sharp Knife And Tool Sharpener

Norton Norax Belts

There are three 3/4″ x 12″ Norton Norax Belts included in the kit. The Norton Norax Belts utilize very consistent aluminum oxide abrasives. The belts have a depth to the abrasive surface, unlike any other belts we carry. The depth to the abrasives allows the abrasives to break away and expose fresh abrasives below. This abrasive configuration allows it to run cooler, last 2 to 5 times longer, leave a very consistent finish and even cut faster.

X65 Norax Belt – This 3/4″ x 12″ belt features 65-micron aluminum oxide abrasive particles. This translates to roughly a P220 grit. This is a coarse belt that can be used for most coarse sharpening needs.

X22 Norax Belt – This 3/4″ x 12″ belt features 22-micron aluminum oxide abrasive particles. This translates to roughly a P800 grit. This is a fine to a medium belt that can be used to refine a coarsely sharpened edge or refine an edge that is starting to dull.

X4 Norax Belt – This 3/4″ x 12″ belt features 4-micron aluminum oxide abrasive particles. This translates to roughly a P3000 grit. This is a very fine belt that can be used to put a very fine edge that is almost mirror polished.

6000 Grit Belt

The 6000 grit belt is used to put the finest razor-sharp edge on your knives. This 1/2″ x 12″ thinner belt conforms to your knives so it can be used to sharpen serrated edges as well as heavily curved edges like gut hooks.

Re-curve and Concave Blade sharpening

Some of the toughest knives to sharpen are knives that have a re-curve or a concave edge. The flexible belt design allows you to easily sharpen these knives. The Ken Onion Edition will even sharpen a concave gut hook on hunting knives.

Scissors

This versatile sharpener will also tackle scissors and tools. A scissors guide will easily and quickly sharpen common household scissors to a 60° angle with no setup time

Sharpening Other Tools

The angle guides for each tool are removable and expose the belt on the triangle cassette. This can be used to sharpen a wide range of common shop and garden tools such as lawnmower blades, axes, shovels, pruners, and more.

While not designed for it, carpenters and woodworkers can also use this tool for sanding or smoothing in tight spaces due to the triangle design.

Cost

The KTS unit cost approximately $70  and the Ken Onion unit is priced at $130. I personally use the Ken Onion version as I like the adjustable angle feature and variable speed trigger.

Overall Thoughts

Trust me to make the investment and sharpen things yourself – there’ no wait or downtime to your tools

Work Sharp WS3000 Tool Sharpening System

I love sharp chisels and hand planes but I hate sharpening them. I hate it so much that for many years I  used my lumberyards sharpening service to avoid sharpening my own tools. While that system worked great, it costs me money and was not always fast or convenient. Thats where the Work Sharp WS3000 tool sharpener comes into play.

Work Sharp WS3000

Ive been using the Work Sharp WS3000 Sharpener for nine years in my shop. If you’d like to read my review from 10-years ago click here. Work Sharp WS3000 Tool Review.

It’s an air cooled, dry sharpening system and uses 150mm pressure sensitive adhesive [PSA] sand paper, on a spinning disc to sharpen tools.

Some of the PSA grits I use are:

  • P80 Ceramic Oxide
  • P120 Ceramic Oxide
  • P400 Aluminum Oxide
  • P1000 Aluminum Oxide
  • Micro Mesh 3600 [honing]

First Impression and 10-Year Look Back

My first thought brought me back to a job site where I used a belt sander to dress up a chisel in a pinch.  The Work Sharp WS3000 is a dry sharpening system but not nearly that crude – it can quickly, accurately and consistently sharpen, flatten the back and hone a blade.

It stores neat and compact on my workbench and has completely changed how I deal with my chisels and planes in the shop. Now if I nick a chisel, I immediately touch it up and don’t place it off to the side until I have a dozen of dull chisels.  The whole process takes maybe 5-minutes.

Looking back at this tools, its a 20-year investment that keeps your tools razor sharp and saves you time in doing it. I’ve personally recommended this tool to dozens of contractors over the years.

Work Sharp WS3000 – How It Works

The WS3000 weighs around 16 lbs. and is a well built machine that uses a 1/5 hp induction motor. It spins fairly quiet and with almost no vibration and does not bog down when blade pressure is applied.

The WS3000 has two types of wheels for sharpening;

  • Tempered glass wheels [2-sided adhesive]
  • Slotted “see-through” Edge-Vision wheel allows for sharpening curved, carving and lathe tools from underneath the wheel.

Who Would Benefit From Using It?

The Work Sharp WS3000 Wood Tool dry sharpening system is recommended for the serious woodworker, contractor or DIYer and easily sharpens:

  • Chisels
  • Plane irons
  • Lathe tools
  • Carving tools
  • Other woodworking and contoured tools

Sharpening Options and Angles

There are three ways to sharpen tools on the Work sharp:

  1. Freehand with tool rest
  2. Sharpening port [precise]
  3. Edge-Vision disk – [lets you hold tool below but look at edge]

My favorite feature on the WS3000 is the sharpening port, and I pretty much only use this method. The sharpening port enables sharpening of chisels and plane irons up to 2” wide and has four pre-set, easily adjustable, and most importantly REPEATABLE angles from:

  • 20 degree
  • 25 degrees
  • 30degrees
  • 35 degrees
  • Great for micro-beveling

I found adjusting the sharpening port super easy to use and super accurate. Wider tools can be sharpened freehand on top of the wheel, using the top mounted tool rest and lathe tools can be sharpened under the wheel with the Edge-Vision sharpening wheel.

The sharpening port has a left and right guide rail and is complimented by an adjustable fence  that can help you achieve a square grind on Tools up to 2-inches wide.

A “lapping” self-sticking adhesive abrasive is provided with each set of abrasives and is applied to the sharpening port to help remove burs from the back edge of the tool your sharpening. The sharpening port also acts as a heat sink,  air is forced up and through the sharpening port heat sink to help cool it. This air coming system and geared down motor both work to allow for higher material removal rates without overheating affecting the steel temper.

How I Set Up My Work Sharp WS3000 Discs

I set up my two glass wheels and Edge-vision wheel with several different grits of abrasives to suit my needs. I have a P80 side and a P120 side on the same glass disc for rapid grinding and the other disc with a finer abrasives for more honing and finishing.  On my second disc I have P120 and P400. The slotted wheel has P120 grit. I find that the 120 grit is used the most, and I really like that I can quickly flip the glass wheel over to use the two different grit abrasives.

Lessons Learned

The biggest lesson learned for me was time and pressure. What I mean by that folks at Work Sharp recommends a 1-2 second “plunge-pull” contact with the abrasive wheel. I’ve been known to use a 5-10 seconds contact which can negatively affect temper and overheat the tool blade.

The other lesson is using the correct pressure. Let the WS3000 do the work, not you.  Wearing of the abrasive disks seemed to vary on several factors such as;

  • Blade hardness
  • Width of the tool
  • Extent of edge damage
  • Amount of material taken off to create a sharp edge
  • Changing of the tools bevel
  • Amount of pressure applied to the abrasive disk

A Crepe Stick provided does help extend the life of the abrasive disk as does letting the tool do the work.

If you think you will be taking a lot of material off your tools or your tools are in rough shape I’d recommend getting the P80 grit abrasive which is designed for aggressive grinding.

Pro Tip: micro-bevel your chisels. Sharpen a 25° chisel to a 30° micro-bevel. This not only dramatically speeds up the sharpening process, but also extends the life of your abrasives since the amount of grinding is greatly reduced.

Where to Buy Abrasives

Abrasives can be purchased in kits from retailers such as Woodcraft, Rockler, Hartville Tool, Garrett Wade (coarse, fine, honing, and slotted) or directly from DARE-X in any mix and match quantity. Abrasive kits sell for approximately $14.00.

10-Year Look-back – Impression

The Work Sharp WS3000 is a real deal sharpening system and is priced extremely fairly for what it delivers. It completely eliminates the problems I encountered with hand sharpening jigs by delivering a precise, accurate, repeatable bevel angles every time!

I’m not a big fan of sharpening anything but I want sharp tools. Having to stop to sharpen tools slows the project down and let’s face it, often times it doesn’t happen.

The Work Sharp WS3000 takes the pain and the time out of sharpening, you can sharpen blades quickly, consistently, and easily and oh yea…. did I mention its FAST?

I highly recommend this tool!

Where To Buy the Work Sharp WS3000

The Work Sharp WS3000 can be purchased at most quality woodworking stores for approx. $250.00 and Amazon and around $200 at ACME Tools or here
