High-Torque Performance

The Hilti SIW 10-22 3/4″ High-Torque Impact Wrench isn’t adorned with fancy controls or features. However, it’s a straight forward powerhouse for really difficult fastening applications. The combination of the robust brushless motor and the new NURON battery platform result in one of the most powerful cordless 3/4″ impact wrenches.

Sending tools to the fleet mechanic in the quarry usually results in a short life. The environment and shear size of the equipment makes it the perfect testing location for high capacity tools like the Hilti SIW 10-22 Impact Wrench. One of the most impressive things about the SIW 10-22 is the nut busting capability of this wrench. It can break free many bolted connections that some 1″ cordless impact wrenches can’t do.

It’s so powerful that it will break fasteners. Hilti publishes a warning on their site stating that there is a risk of over-tightening and damaging fasteners. This impact wrench broke off several 5/8″ fasteners with very little effort, therefore users should be careful on small fastener applications.

The SIW 10-22 doesn’t have many features which is refreshing with an impact wrench. The SIW 10-22 has a well placed LED light just above the battery that provides good light for the work surface. There is a simple switch to change between speed 1 and 2. It also has a simple green LED light to designate which gear its in.

For those that work at height and require a positive retention for sockets the SIW 10-22 has a  through hole friction ring anvil. It’s a pretty simple system and works well.

The Hilti SIW 10-22 High-Torque 3/4″ Impact Wrench is outstanding. It’s built like a tank, it has very impressive torque, has a great price point, and it offers one of the best warranties on the market. Makita 40V MAX XGT 1/2″ Mid and 3/4″ High Torque Impact Wrench Review

The 40V MAX XGT  tools are Makita‘s flagship professional-grade cordless tools. This tool review will examine the 1/2″ Mid-Torque Model GWT07Z and 3/4″ High-Torque Model GWT01Z impact wrenches. The Makita XGT impact wrenches are powerful but refined and comfortable to use. They build upon the already excellent Makita 18V LXT impact wrenches.

During the ToolBoxBuzz Best Cordless Mid-Torque Impact Wrench Head-2-Head, the XGT was not included due to its specs exceeding the selection criteria. The high-torque model is also only currently available in a 3/4″ anvil version, making it difficult to include in future comparisons. Controls and Ergonimics

Makita’s switching system is intuitive and fast to use. It offers a degree of speed settings and options that is unmatched. The speed modes feature an auto stop to prevent the tool from throwing fasteners once they break loose. Additionally, there is a Full Speed mode which will bring the tool to max RPMs and impacts as soon as the trigger is pushed.

The grip of both the Mid and High torque versions of the XGT are comfortable with generous rubber over-molding. The variable speed trigger on both models is also very responsive. There are zero delays when activating the trigger switch. This makes feathering with the tool or carefully breaking hardware loose with the tools very easy to do without snapping. For when you need some, but not all of the Ugga-Duggas.

Weight and Balance

The Mid-Torque GWT07Z pairs very well with a 2.5 Ah 40V MAX XGT battery. This smaller pack creates a more comfortable and lightweight package that is more than capable of handling the majority of tasks with no loss in performance. With the bigger brother, the GWT01Z, a larger battery pack is recommended. I found a 4.0 or 5.0 Ah battery pack provided better balance and kept the tool upright easier. The extra power also better supports the output and performance of the tool.

Tested Torque Performance

To quantify the breaking torque force of both XGT models, I used a B-RAD Select BL cordless torque system. This is a highly calibrated cordless torque applier that allows the user to dial a fastener to a computer-controlled torque value. This tool was featured in our Head-2-Head and I used a similar testing protocol.

The bolts in our testing rig were torqued to a specific value and then each impact wrench was set to its highest speed and power setting. The tools are used for ten seconds to attempt to break the bolts loose. If unsuccessful, the bolts are lowered by ten pounds and the process is repeated.

The Mid-Torque’s max breaking force is published as 810 Ft./Lbs. However, during testing, the XGT was only able to break loose a bolt at 510 Ft./Lbs. The High-Torque, while published at 1510 Ft./Lbs., was capable of breaking loose at 1450 Ft./Lbs. Our testing rig requires the use of very large 1 1/4″ diameter Grade 8 bolts with a 1 7/8″ head. Adapting the 1/2″ Mid-Torque tool to a 1 7/8″ impact socket results in a loss in applied torque. However, the bigger brother High-Torque model with a 3/4″ anvil is far better suited to a task like this. As a result, the High-Torque’ tested value was far more consistent with the published value.

Makita XGT Battery Protection

Batteries are not getting any less expensive. Correspondingly, Makita included some excellent design features to protect the 40V MAX XGT batteries from the abuse that a tool like an impact wrench is susceptible to. Both models of XGT impact wrenches feature a flexible joint at the base of the tool’s grip. This joint absorbs felt vibration for the user as well as prevents it from reaching the battery pack.

In addition to this, Makita maintains its practice of including two white silicone buffers in the construction of its tools. These buffers keep the battery packs snug when inserted and prevent movement. Less movement results in less wear on the battery contacts, which results in a longer lifespan for the tool and the batteries.

Overall Impressions of the Makita XGT Impact Wrenches

My first summer working on an underground construction crew was a huge learning experience. One of my first responsibilities was to set up the trench shoring jacks using the right spacers. The only tools available were a breaker bar and a mismatched socket set. I would have traded anything for the XGT impact wrenches back then!

Powerful and Packaged Right

Hilti’s new lineup of tools designed for the NURON battery platform are a pretty significant improvement in performance and features. This new high-torque cordless impact wrench has definitely benefited from the brushless motor and improved battery pack. It’s clear Hilti was trying to improve both run-time and power while cutting down the overall size of the tool and making a much more durable battery pack. They certainly accomplished all that. This is a great impact wrench that can handle a wide range of applications from fastening structural steel bolts to installing large wood fasteners.

The Hilti SIW 8-22 sits somewhere between a mid-range and high-torque tool. There are other cordless impact wrenches of this size with higher torque ratings for sure, but we like the fact that this tool has two different gears offering a lower torque rating of 443 ft-lbs and a higher rating of 738 ft-lbs. If you remember our Mid-Torque Cordless Impact Wrench Head-To-Head test, we defined mid-torque as 300-550 ft-lbs of torque. So as you can see this tool really fits both categories and that’s a huge plus especially if you want to have one tool that can handle a wider range of applications.

We’ve been using the Hilti SIW 8-22 on a couple framing projects for installing large wood fasteners and concrete screw anchors. The tool is compact enough that using it for wood anchors is a pleasure and it handles that application much better than a standard impact driver. It really shines installing concrete anchors and large lag bolts.

Paired up with a 4.0 Ah battery pack it’s really well balanced and comfortable to use. Weighing in at 5.3 lbs (without the battery) it’s certainly not super light but it’s much better than older similar powered impact wrenches.

Final Thoughts

The Hilti SIW 8-22, 1/2″ cordless impact wrench is a welcome upgrade from Hilti. Moving on to brushless motors on their new lineup is a drastic improvement and certainly helps them keep up with the competition. It’s clear they have invested a lot in improving their battery durability with the new NURON pack design. With a smaller footprint this is a great impact wrench for users looking to cover a wider range of applications that you might see in both a mid-torque design and a high-torque design.

Losing the Air Hose

Whenever working on vehicles, I lean towards pneumatic air tools for big jobs that require a lot of power. The thought of not being attached to the airline and having a cordless battery-powered tool that can deliver the same power is a dream come true. I had serious doubts that a battery-powered Impact Wrench could handle those high torque situations. My second worry was the battery life. I thought there was no way that a battery-powered Impact Wrench, if capable of such high torque values could last a reasonable amount of time.

Well, as outlined below, I can tell you that I was more than impressed. This Makita XWT17 Impact Wrench is going to leave my air hose to collect dust and seldom be used. This tool delivered plenty of power. The battery life of this tool lasted longer than I would have imagined and will last for multiple jobs. In case I wasn’t clear, I will definitely be losing the air hose.

Makita XWT17 Impact Wrench Controls

Light on/off.

The light icon allows you to select whether you want the LED light to be on or off. My older tools don’t have a dedicated on/off feature so it is definitely nice to have the option, especially if you need to save battery.

4 different levels of force.

You can also choose from 4 different impact force levels by pressing the button that looks like a bolt. This is a great feature because it will allow you to choose the amount of torque suitable for the work you are performing. I find this especially useful in preventing the breakage of smaller bolts or threads.

3 different bolt modes.

Next, if you press the mode button you can choose from 3 different bolt modes. When tightening this mode stops the driving once impact blows have begun. This will prevent overtightening.  When in reverse the driving will stop once the impact blows have ended. This is a really nice feature that will help prevent that situation when you zip off a lug nut so fast it go flying across the shop.

Full-Speed mode.

Last, is Full-Speed Mode. If you hold the mode button down it will put the wrench into full speed mode. This will allow the Impact Wrench to spin at full speed with the slightest pull of the trigger, and eliminate you from having to squeeze the trigger fully to reach full speed. Full speed mode can be turned off by holding the mode button down again. Full speed mode is indicated by the little light to the left of the mode button.

Makita XWT17 Impact Wrench Ergonomics

The Makita XWT17 Impact Wrench is very comfortable to hold in my hand due to the soft rubber grip. The rubber grip, although soft and comfortable, feel’s strong and durable. There don’t seem to be any hot spots in my hand when holding this tool and it is well balanced. The top of the tool is a good size but compact size for the amount of torque this Impact Wrench puts out. With the battery in the bottom, the weight distribution is very well balanced. The Makita XWT17 Impact Wrench is a comfortable and well-balanced tool that feels good to hold.

Makita XWT17 Impact Wrench LED Lighting

Here you can see the two led lights that in my opinion deliver plenty of light at night. Unfortunately, we have all run into that project that runs a little later into the night than you would like. The dual led lights provide ample light to be able to finish that late-running project, or even find that missing lug that rolled away and is hiding in the dark. As mentioned earlier there is an on/off switch that allows you to select whether you want the LED light to be on or off. I leave the light off when using the tool most of the time to help save battery, although I’m sure that these LED lights use very little power.

Makita XWT17 Impact Wrench Testing

The first thing I did was put the Impact Wrench to the lug nuts on my truck to see how it performed. As you can see my brake rotors were pretty bad, so I figured I would change my rotors, brake pads and rotate my tires. All four tires needed to come off, and then be put back on when finished. My lug nuts are hand torqued to 98 ft. lbs. so I thought this would be an easy test for this Impact Wrench that is said to pack a whopping 740 ft. lbs. of nut-busting torque. The Makita XWT17 Impact Wrench had absolutely no problem taking all of the lug nuts off and made me quickly realize that I won’t be dragging out my air hose as much as I used to.

Rusty U-Bolts

I recently restored a beautiful set of Danna-44 axles for one of my classic jeeps. In a jam, I installed the wrong U-bolts, and they did the trick for a while.  When I went to replace the U-bolts with my air Impact Wrench, it wouldn’t budge the rusty nuts.  I also tried with a long breaker bar and they were not coming off easy. My friend once told me that he doesn’t take nuts off U-bolts, he just cuts them.  With recently restored new axles I wasn’t about to risk scratching them. I really wasn’t expecting the Makita XWT17 Impact Wrench to have success, but wouldn’t you know it zipped all four nuts off no problem!

Lag Bolts

Next,  I took the Impact Wrench to a shed dolly I was working on. Basically, I put wheels under one side of the shed so I can move it around. I had to mount some 2”x12” pieces of wood to the top with some 8” lag bolts for stabilization. Needless to say, it was a breeze for the Makita XWT17 Impact Wrench to drive the lag bolts deep into the wood.

Will the Makita XWT17 Impact Wrench take my lawnmower blades off?

This is a question I feel needs to be addressed. Being a bit of a “lawn nut” I often come across people (in person and over the internet) that are unable to remove the cutting blades on all different brands of lawnmowers due to the bolt that holds the cutting blades on being very tight from the factory. Some of these people even settled for sharpening the blades while leaving them attached to the lawnmower. Removing the blades for proper sharpening will give you a better result.

On my Bad Boy lawnmower, the blades are torqued at 110 ft. lbs, but it seems that from the factory they sometimes are torqued even higher.   In the past, I would tell them to buy a small air compressor and an Impact Wrench, but now I can definitely recommend this battery-powered Impact Wrench. One quick blast of the Makita XWT17 Impact Wrench and the blades were off. I was able to sharpen my blades and get back to leaving those beautiful lawn stripes!

Further Testing of the Makita XWT17

Overall the Makita excelled at all the tasks I commonly perform with the Impact Wrench.  The level of performance I experienced made me look for more demanding tests that a professional wrench-turner may be required to perform. I don’t usually work on big trucks or large machinery, but they seemed like the perfect test subjects for the Makita XWT17. I put the Impact Wrench to an International 4400 which has a lug nut torque value of 550 ft. lbs. The lug nuts did not come off quickly, like on a normal smaller vehicle, but after about 24 seconds the Makita XWT17 Impact Wrench was able to break one free.

This Makita XWT17 Impact Wrench worked excellent on all other low to mid torque tests that were performed and can probably get you out of a jam if you are working on high torque applications. If consistently working with heavy machinery the Makita XWT07Z, High‑Torque 3/4″ Sq. Drive Impact Wrench may be the better option. The high torque Impact Wrench would be much more suitable for continuous high toque jobs like this one. It will also have a 3/4 square drive as opposed to the 1/2″ drive like on the Makita Mid Torque Impact Wrench, eliminating the need for an adapter as you can see in the photograph.

Improvements and Battery

I really like this tool. Coming from an old air Impact Wrench, there isn’t much that can be improved on. The Makita XWT17 Impact Wrench met all of my expectations.  The 18V Lithium-Ion battery I used throughout the testing, impressively, remained above 3/4 full. The brushless motor in this tool is said by Makita to be incredibly efficient and is electronically controlled to optimize battery energy use for up to 50 percent longer run time. As I mentioned earlier this Impact Wrench had a hard time breaking the lug nuts loose on an International 4400 which has a lug nut torque value of 550 ft. lbs. This Impact Wrench should provide enough power for anyone that is not using it on heavy machinery.

Price and Availability

This tool is available as a bare tool for $239.00 which I feel is completely worth it. I absolutely love this Impact Wrench and will be using it a lot on many projects to come. Overall Impressions

The Impact Wrench feels sturdy like an Impact Wrench should, but at the same time, it is comfortable to hold. I love the bright LED light that can be shut off when not needed. I also appreciate the different power modes and torque modes.  Not being attached to the air hose deeply expands my options to use the tool. And last, but definitely not least, this mid torque Impact Wrench more than exceeded my basic everyday use. I feel like there isn’t much I can’t do with this Makita XWT17 Impact Wrench. Within the first week of owning this Impact Wrench, I found so many uses for this tool that I am confident that it will be one of my tools that stays out of the toolbox due to frequent use.

We recently got a chance to start using the new Milwaukee M18 FUEL 1″ High Torque Impact Wrench w/ ONE-KEY. Weighing in at just over 10 lbs this isn’t your everyday impact wrench. The Milwaukee high torque impact wrench designed for the toughest jobs. Tasks like installing large diameter structural bolts high in the sky on steel erection projects or removing huge lug nuts on heavy equipment and big trucks.

Power, Performance & Portability

Here at work we have a large shop for maintenance on dump trucks, excavators, loaders and lots of large commercial excavation equipment. Historically we’ve used very large 1″ pneumatic impact wrenches to bust loose large diameter fasteners. The large pneumatic impact wrenches require a substantial air supply from very loud compressors. Besides being loud the compressors are expensive to own and operate.

Powerful

The new Milwaukee M18 FUEL 1″ High Torque Impact Wrench w/ ONE-KEY has been impressive both in the shop and the field. The first question I’m sure you’re asking yourself is whether the new High Torque Impact Wrench has the power of a traditional pneumatic impact wrench of similar size. The feedback from guys using it has been very positive. The tool is getting the same tasks done that had previously been done with pneumatic tools.

Portable

The biggest advantage of the new Milwaukee M18 FUEL 1″ High Torque Impact Wrench w/ ONE-KEY is portability. Both in the shop and in the field the advantage of not dragging around a hose and not needing a compressor is a huge improvement. This is especially true for our mobile mechanics that work on equipment at remove jobsites where a compressor and generator are needed to operate older pneumatic impact wrenches.

This is a cordless tool that requires a serious grip, the power and torque can easily overtake a casual grip. It’s a total nut buster with plenty of power for the toughest jobs.

Around the shop, the reduced noise level by turning off the compressor is also a huge improvement. Our old large compressor is very loud making the shop a tough place to work with all the noise.

Great Run-Time

We tested the Milwaukee M18 FUEL 1″ High Torque Impact Wrench w/ ONE-KEY with a pair of XC8.0 Ah High Output batteries. Theses batteries provide excellent run-time and with two of them it was more than enough to keep up with the work. So far we’ve never had a point where one battery ran down before the 2nd one could be re-charged.

Features & Controls

The Milwaukee M18 FUEL 1″ High Torque Impact Wrench w/ ONE-KEY isn’t a flashy tool with lots of features. Unlike some cordless tools the LED light on this impact wrench was very impressive. The large support in front of the grip holds the LED light that shines brightly on the work area.

The large side handle is easy to position and provides much needed stability and control for a tool this powerful. I was skeptical at first of the “plastic” handle but it’s very robust and we’ve had no issues with durability.

As far as controls go this cordless impact wrench is like most others with a variable speed trigger, forward and reverse switch, 4 speed settings switch, and a comfortable grip area. In addition, this unit has the ONE-KEY feature which allows users to customize the speed settings for the 4 different speeds, help track the tool, lock it out from un-authorized users, and many more features for assigning the tool to crews and tool management.

The tool location feature is one of my favorites. While it doesn’t do real-time location it will tag the last known location where the tool was in the proximity of a device with the ONE-KEY app installed. With the growing number of tradesmen on our jobs that use Milwaukee tools the likelihood of the tool pinging a device is really high.

Overall Impression

The Milwaukee M18 FUEL 1″ High Torque Impact Wrench w/ ONE-KEY is a beast! From our experience using it over the last couple of months this tool can easily replace similar sized pneumatic impact wrenches without compromising on power and torque. It’s well balanced, lighter than traditional impact wrenches and far more portable. If you’re ready to cut that air hose and expand your cordless tool lineup with an extremely powerful impact wrench then look no further. This one is a home run and worth the investment!

Run Time

What’s great about this tool is that it will run on any of Ridgid’s 18V slide-pack batteries back to the early to mid 2000s. We were looking for maximum runtimes though so we put on a new 6.0 Ah Octane battery. Nothing is worse than being in the middle of driving a fastener or changing a tire for your crew and not having the juice needed to do the job. The onboard fuel gauge on the battery was a huge help in tracking the remaining run time.

This 6.0 Ah battery was providing the longer run times and never made the shop reach back into the toolbox for the air powered wrench.

Fleet Maintenance and Repairs

The ½” Impact Wrench was best choice when it came to equipment and automotive repair applications. We were using it for everything from tire repairs, tire rotations and repairs where we would normally grab an air powered wrench.

The tri-beam LED light is perfectly located on the tool and helps illuminate your work area. This is especially handy when working on the underside of a vehicle and you are relying on “drop lights”.

Construction Applications

We used the Ridgid ½” Impact Wrench not only in the garage for fleet maintenance and repairs but on a recent deck and shed build where we needed to drive ½” x 10” SPAX screws.

This wrench was beast. My lead carpenter was super impressed, said he even preferred this to one over another brand he has at home because of how well balanced it is, its weight, and how much of a beast it is.

He also saw the R86011 for additional applications such as driving fasteners like Tapcons, large diameter sleeve bolts, etc.
This impact wrench has a good design of weight and power. The R86011 is perfect because is not too heavy, not too long, not too weak. These combinations make it a must have tool for mechanics and contractors. Lastly, if this ½” Ridgid Impact Wrench is in your arsenal you will be throwing it in the trunk on long trips as part of your roadside assistant kit.

DEWALT® Debuts TOOL CONNECT 20V MAX* XR® 1/2″ Mid-Range Impact Wrench

TOWSON, MD (January 14, 2019) – DEWALT adds to its growing line of 20V MAX* tools with the XR® 1/2″ Mid-Range Impact Wrench featuring the TOOL CONNECT system (DCF896). The TOOL CONNECT system allows for tool control through its PRECISION WRENCH and PRECISION TAP control features, as well as a variety of additional customizable settings within the TOOL CONNECT app.

The TOOL CONNECT 20V MAX* XR® 1/2″ Mid-Range Impact Wrench achieves 0-2000 RPM, 3100 impacts per minute, and a maximum torque of 330 ft.-lbs. in forward and 600 ft.-lbs. in reverse.
